A Rabbit Hunting Machine

My Dad has to be the best rabbit hunter that I know. He has been ate up with it since he was a kid growing up in Raceland. We grew up with beagles my whole life and I was lucky enough to grow up in a house by woods we could hunt.
There is nothing like standing in the woods listening to the dogs trail a rabbit. Very intense and probably my favorite type of hunting.
Below is a pic of my Dad from 1977 after his most memorable hunt up to that point. He said he found a briar patch that was 6 feet tall and was wide open inside. He said he could almost stand up in it. He managed to crawl in there and he sat down....waited for the dogs to push the rabbits in there. Got his limit without moving places. I absolutely LOVE this picture.
Also, yesterday my Dad suprised me with an early Christmas present. I asked him to bring me one of his shotguns so I can use to rabbit hunt this year since mine needs work. He showed up with a new Benelli Nova 20 gauge pump. I was shocked!

He was 25. He didn't believe in trimming his beard.

My Grandad was that way when I was little. He would take me out to the woods with him when he let the dogs run, I was barely tall enough to see over the tops of the briars.
Those were the fist hunting trips I ever took.
When his health started to turn down hill, he had to get rid of his dogs. Hw would sit in his rocker on the porch with a casset player listening to old tapes of his dogs running rabbits and he could tell you each one of them by the sound of their bay.

Your dad looks familiar. You still have family in raceland?

And that's one hell of a pic.

Yeah man. Sure do. I'm related to the Hitt's and St. Romains. We also have family in Gheens.

HOLY CRAP....
are you related to hat?
And you are right.....nothing sounds as good as a good pack of beagles running rabbits in the woods, their voices cascading throughout the oaks and sweet gums.

I don't believe so. At least I hope not.

I know some St.Romains in BR. Went to St.George with some of the kids back in the day.

Good picture Deacon. I have some similar pictures of my Dad.
A good rabbit chase is almost as badass as a good deer chase. My old man grew up running deer dogs and still does, despite his condition.
We were out there this weekend. I got to see a few good chases, but no bucks.

I got invited on one marsh hunt with beagles, and it was the bomb. Great fun, except when I fell into the flotant marsh.
Benelli 20 ga pump is a perfect rabbit gun. I won one at Delta Waterfowl banquet, and use it all the time.

This happened to my friend one day when we were kids. His Dad was PISSED at him....not for falling into the marsh, but because a rabbit went by him as he fell.

I can't wait to use it!

Many of my fondest childhood memories came from rabbit hunting with my dad. Seems like over the years the population of rabbits has dropped steadily on our land. I think coyotes and bobcats have really mess things up for us.

I remember some pretty awesome rabbit hunting trips down to Venice and Empire. It was the only time my dad would ever go camping.

I've had a couple good hunts on levees in Dularge. Haven't done that in a while. My family has a small tract of land in Raceland that we typically hunt. My Dad's friend has some pasture land in Larose that is ideal for rabbits. Plus he still has beagles. Can't wait to get out there this year.
