The LSU Compliance Office has issued several Cease & Desist notifications for products including the name, likeness and/or image of LSU football student-athlete Tyrann Mathieu.

You can print all of the "Honey Badger" products and apparel that you care to produce.

However, you CANNOT print "Honey Badger" products that include LSU or LSU player items:

1. the number 7
2. TM7 (or any other likeness)
3. the name of an LSU player
4. the image of an LSU player
5. LSU

This stuff is okay:

This stuff is NOT okay:

The NCAA is ridiculous.

I don't see what the problem is if he isn't getting paid

if you're not younger than 10, who would wear any of this sh*t anyway?

They're not claiming the number 7 per se, but because the player wears that number, people would know you're referring to a particular player. It's all about likeness.

Would be interesting to know where this comes from. I would be really surprised how you can claim a copyright issue on either the number seven, or the combination of TM7.

profitting off the image/likeness of a student-athlete. it isn't hard to understand.

So it's ok for LSU and NCAA to use a player's likeness to make money (ex. jerseys, video games, etc) but not for anyone else including the player himself ....

That may be what LSU is claiming, but it's all illegetimate, with the possible exception of #5. I direct you to the Saints' attempt to claim ownership of the fleur-de-lis. No one owns that, and LSU sure as shite doesn't own the number 7, the letters TM7, any players' name, and any players' image.

Now, if TM wants to take you to court over it, that's a different matter.

If this is the case, then how can EA assign position specific numbers in its football and basketball video game franchises?

A shirt that has HB7 doesn't have anything to do with LSU.

TM7 seems like it does, but....

WTF?

HB7!

True didn't think about that.

But I do think the NCAA should consider changing rules like this. If the guy is a star athlete I don't see a problem with him getting endorsements or having something like this.

you must be a legal scholar. Will you regale me with more jurisprudence you've researched on this topic?

The number 7 by itself is okay to produce. You can make all of the shirts you want with a 7 on it.

However:

"Honey Badger" + "7" = "Tyrann Mathieu"

Is there anybody else that those two items reference?

If you took a poll, would most fans think that it meant Tyrann Mathieu?

In short:

(1) Honey Badger by itself is okay.
(2) The number 7 by itself is okay.
(3) Combination of Honey Badger and the number 7 is NOT okay.

1) The Saints do not own the fleur-de-lis, but a particular color and stylized version of the fleur-de-lis is the official Saints logo. I disagree with them trying to claim the fleur-de-lis itself, but I have no issue with them claiming ownership of their particular logo.

2) The issue with TM7 is with NCAA compliance issues. It comes down to profit from a player's likeness.
