BCS "fix" question - the "+1"

I was listening to Sirius 91 and the host was talking about how the BCS most likely will take baby steps to a playoff and potentially would adopt a +1 model with conference championship as a prerequisite for championship game participation.
It got me to thinking - what would a +1 accomplish if, say LSU were to win against BAMA under a +1 scenario? Would you really make LSU play ANOTHER game to be named champion?
The only scenario where a +1 would make any sense to me would be the scenario of 2006 where Auburn was undefeated SEC Champ, won the Sugar Bowl and still could not claim the championship.
I think a +1 "if necessary" would be the only reason for a +1. I really do not want a playoff at all and I hope the BCS bowls do not give in to the pressure in institute them. Sorry, Brando.

I agree. If LSU wins then the system worked perfectly.

Every scenario outside of the current BCS is dumbassery.
Imagine the howls... Oklahoma State gets to SIT ON THEIR COUCHES while LSU plays Bama and then has to play OSU?

Whatever is adopted won't be perfect, but it'd be a lot better than it is now.
I like the idea of a 6 team playoff by BCS standings, but it days away from each BCS bowl in my opinion.

plus one is the dumbest shite i ever heard. what if v.t. would have only entered the sugar bowl with one loss? if they would beat the shite out of michigan, bama beat the shite out of osu, lsu beat the shite out of stanford....who would play in the plus one? yep....you guessed it.....we will let the computers decide.
accomplishment=0

I am not following, why would this happen?

I agree! I'm not saying this as an LSU homer just thinking about us this year. I would have put LSU's Cotton Bowl team of 2010 against anyone in a playoff scenario and would have liked our chances. We were on the verge of being very, very good.
I liked our Cotton Bowl win and it was a fine reward for a good, not great, season. Frankly, we did not deserve a shot at a championship because we blew it during the season.

In a plus 1 scenario, someone sits while two others play it out.
This year may not be the best scenario because there is a 0 loss team, but in a 3 way of 1 loss teams, someone sits while the other two play an extra game.

LSU would sit. Bama/OK State would be a play in game.

Wrong. A plus one is having an extra game so it would be like having a 4 team playoff. 1 would play 4 and 2 would play 3, then the winners would face off for the National Championship.

I think a +1 system would seed the top four teams, most likely using BCS standings. One bowl gets a 1 vs 4 matchup, another bowl gets a 2 vs 3 matchup...the winners meet in the championship game a week later. Not sure why a team would ever get a bye.

But what if you have 2 undefeated's? Or three? Who sits and who plays? You have accomplished zero more than where you are right now.
I honestly would not change anything, but craft some "if required" or doomsday rule laying out what would lead to a +1.

That is the +1 seeded idea, which makes more sense to me.

Nobody sits in a plus one. 1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3, then the winners meet.

exactly - I think its a great solution
no matter what, BCS, +1, March Madness, Baseball Regionals....someone is always on the bubble, on the outside looking in. That will never change.
in regards to college football, the argument is always #2/#3....I think we'd have alot less bitching if the argument is #4 vs #5 for that slot. There will be bitching regardless, but by pulling in just two more teams, I think it hedges it a bit

The only logical "fix" that would work this year is Okie State and Bama playing to see who faces LSU.
Even that's sort of an injustice to LSU, anything else would be much more of one.

Exactly. This is what a +1 means. The 1v4 and 2v3 scenarios are a playoff. A +1 system is objective to the situation at hand, which means that if only 2 teams were undefeated, there would be no additional game, just the 1 championship game between the two.

I dont think they really give a crap, I think the +1 would be instituted purely for financial reasons, not fairness etc.
Posted on 12/8/11 at 9:23 am to !Tiger
In a plus one, I think it would be 1 v. 4 and 2 v. 3 in a semifinal, then the winners would play for the ship. So it would be LSU/Stanford and OSU/Bama...in other words we would end up playing Bama for the national championship anyway!
