BCS Drama
By Rece Davis
ESPN.com
Drama could be in the offing during the BCS Selection Show (ESPN, 8:15 p.m. ET Sunday). We'll let you know exclusively who will play in the Allstate BCS National Championship Game.

Columnists, bloggers and people on Twitter have been exploding all week on both sides of the rematch issue. Is it ideal? No. But is it ideal for a team to be voted higher solely to avoid a rematch? The answer to that is also no.

The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two best teams. If that happens to be LSU and Alabama, so be it. The fact that they're in the same division is an anomaly.

My primary criticism of the BCS in the early years was that the formula kept changing in response to a set of circumstances that were unlikely to be repeated. I believe that's what we have this season. If the formula is deemed to be as thorough as possible, it's the height of folly to try to adjust it so something "can't happen again."

If the BCS wanted to make the title game just for conference champions, that would be fraught with potential controversy, too. Would it be crazy to expect Georgia, Clemson and Oklahoma to win Saturday? Not really.

If a rule limiting the title game to conference champion were in place and those results happened Saturday, LSU would be eliminated from the discussion despite having a better record, playing a tougher schedule and beating Oregon decisively while the Ducks would probably go to the title game likely against Oklahoma. Why? Because Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Boise State would be eliminated too. Crazy? Not as crazy as Oklahoma State losing to Iowa State or Oklahoma face-planting against Texas Tech.

Strange things happen in college football. The dramatic impact of an upset is part of what draws us in. To some voters, a conference title will be important in determining which is the best team. My point is that no answer will satisfy everyone. But we'll give you the answer that will ultimately deliver the national champion complete with plenty of lively debate Sunday night. College Football Final will let you know what to expect Saturday night. See you then.

Hey Rece, never mind OSU's body of work and more wins vs top 25 opponents. Nevermind other rematches never get to happen in the past in the MNC game. Its bama so its automatically OK.

i hope OSU wins and still gets left out .....thereby exposing the BCS for the shite that it is and enabling LSU to beat the gumps again making it the GOAT.

NO IT'S NOT!

The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two HIGHEST RANKED teams, which are presumably the two MOST DESERVING.

There have been many times over the course of BCS history where the "second best" team got left out... and rightly so. Who the hell knows who's second best, anyway?

No it's not. It's to find the 1 best team. And Alabama aint' it. Ok State might not be it but who knows?? THE POINT WAS TO DETERMINE IT ON THE FIELD.

So if OSU loses and VA Tech wins, should VA Tech play for the BCSCG? They have the same number of losses as Bama, more wins over top 25 teams, and will be their conference champions.

You'd better believe ESPN is praying OSU blows away OU so their BCS show can quadruple its ratings on Sunday.

Let me preface this by saying that I could care less who we play in NO.

If Okie State, Bama, Va Tech, and LSU where all undefeated, we would rank them by their wins.
Provided Okie State, Va Tech, and LSU win this weekend it would look like this:

1)LSU
2)Okie State
3)Bama
4)Va Tech

OSU's resume isn't better than Bama's. That's the biggest myth going right now. OSU's signature wins are K State, Baylor, Texas and Mizzou. Who cares? They also lost to Iowa State. Bama doesn't have great wins either but their only loss is to #1 in OT.

This is one of the most annoying and ignorant arguments against this suggestion. What if you had a 8 team playoff and #1 lost to #8. Would anyone be up in arms that the better team with the better record was left out of future games?

Conference championships, particularly those with CCGs are unambiguous as it gets. These results should be respected as much as a playoff upset.

That's the strange thing about this whole "debate". It seems as if it's just conceded that Alabama is a better team, and the only issue is whether you vote for the better team or the more "fair" result. It's totally ignored that a voter could vote for Oklahoma State AS the better team.

"The primary purpose of the BCS is to match the two best teams."

Wrong again! The purpose of the BCS is to match #1 vs. #2 in a bowl game.

It's amazing to me that he doesn't even mention that the main reason Alabama is currently ranked higher in the human polls is because they started the season ranked much higher....

Some people call him Lau-rece...cause he speaks of the pompatus of love (i.e. Bama).

He truly is king-kong homer/doucebag of the smarmiest variety.
