I can't believe I'd never thought of it until they mentioned it on The Rewatchables.

To be fair to Officer Balzak (also can't believe I never caught that one), he even repeats his question to her to try to clarify the ask - "let me get this straight, you want us to go over to your house just to check on your son" and Kevin's mom is like yep that's it. Uh, no, you're sort of burying the lede there, Kate.

Also, the biggest plot hole in the movie —in addition to the McAllisters not calling their own home to see if Kevin would answer — is the fact that they never called the cops back. Never called the Village PD back to see how the check-in went, how/what the officer reported back, etc.

The electrician told the mother that the power was back but the phone lines were a mess and it would likely take days to get them back working.

Didn't they mention that the phone lines were damaged in the freak storm that happened the night before?
