I've never really paid attention to recruiting...

So I just looked at the roster and discovered that Phillip Rivers' little brother is a Freshman here...
1. How have I not heard about this, even through the year old news grapevine?
2. Is there any chance he will be 3/4 as good as his brother?

Very unlikely.

I think you answered your own question in the thread title.

You know, before the internet, I did not follow recruiting that much either, except maybe Kevin Faulk, Josh Booty, stuff like that. Welcome to 1997.

He's a big, strong-armed pocket passer. He's a little skinny, but very tall (listed as 6'7") - if he can get to a solid 235 or 240, he could be a tower back there. The expectation is that: if he's 3/4 as good as his brother, he'll split time with Randall being the dual-threat guy (who is apparently better than advertised, based on practices and scout team performance so far).
Rivers will be the mop up QB next year, and the pocket passer 2013 through 2015.

If any QB gets reps next year other than Mett, itll be Jerrad Randall

Yeah, yeah... I'm aware that my internet skills are circa 1997.
I've been a fan long enough to remember the Dinardo era... I've always just paid attention to what goes down on gameday.
As for the grapevine, I've lived in La. for most of my life. If a day went by when I didn't hear people talk about the Tigers, then I was on vacation... I guess I kind of expect that after enough time, even I will hear about recruiting news by word of mouth before I discover it for myself.

Start paying attention
Word on the street and after watching videos, Randall seems to be the QB of the future after Mett is gone.
If he learns the offense, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get Perrilloux type playing time next year. I think he has the same skill set and looks about the same minus the ridiculous stats. Hopefully two completely different attitudes.
They talked about Rivers a little during fall camp but nothing to let us know how he's doing. I've read people say he's impressed so far for a freshman.
So don't be surprised if you see the same system you're seeing now between Randall and Rivers.
I wouldn't be.

Randall is going to be fricking awesome IMO.

A lot of u don't pay any attention on this rant. I told u at the beginning of the season that Rivers was the MVP. in the Miss-Al. all star game. He is 6'7 & can really throw the rock.

I posted this way back on the recruiting board. From Rivers' HS coach. It may have been just coach-speak trying to promote the new guy, but it's what he said.

His Athens, Ala., high school coach, Allen Creasy, said Rivers was further along than his older brother was at this point in his career.
"He's bigger. He's faster, and he throws the ball better," Creasy told The Baton Rouge Advocate. "That's just the truth. I think Stephen's potential and future are unlimited."

So you only think Mett plays 1 year?

I don't either - we have people who are paid to do that.

So you think Mettenberger plays only one season?

Maybe, maybe not - in any event, Rivers should get more playing time in 2013 - maybe I should have said 2014-2015.

Randall will get meaningful reps next season from what I'm hearing. Definitely fits the role of a wildcat style QB, a la RP, RS and JJ this season. I see Rivers getting the true mop-up duty such as Mett has seen a few times this season.

Yeah, I meant to imply that Randall would be the #2 next year, change up and may play significant reps (maybe 25%?) - with Rivers being the third QB to see action in mop-up duty (Towson?).
I got dinged for implying that Mett would only play 1 year, so I guess I should be more clear. I think Rivers will get to play more, hopefully, in 2013, but that will depend on the rotation between Mett and Randall, who I believe will be #1/#2 for the next 2 seasons.
