It's crazy how the so called " experts "...pegged Bama's defense better than any team in history. When you look at the opponents they have played, other than Arkansas, there is not a decent team other than UF, which at the time was playing a 3rd string true Freshman at QB.
2011 Bama opponents :
Kent State = 119th offense
Penn State = 102th
North Texas= 105th
Arkansas = 20th
UF = 73rd
Vandy = 80th
Ole Miss = 104th
UT = 96th
LSU opponents:
Oregon = 4th
MSU = 83rd
WVU = 17th
UK = 114th
UF = 73rd
UT = 96th
Auburn = 72th

So both have played primarily shitty offenses save for two for LSU and one for Alabama?

And Alabama is averaging less than 7 points per game allowed. Why will this game be any different?

You got it, Forrest!!!
79-6.7, Gumps!

I don't think this has been mentioned before

The only reason teh gumps opponents are so low is because they played the gumps, whereas, LSU's defense didn't hurt thier opponents rankings.

Bama average = 87th
LSU average 67th
Not that big of a difference when you average it but it isnt entirely accurate when you imagine the damage a top 10 ranks Offense can do vs a below 80 or so offense

I'll feed the troll. Look at LSU's scoring and red zone offense. LSU's defense and special teams create shorter fields, so their total offense numbers will be down. Do you honestly think a team that's scored less than 35 points against that schedule just once this year has the 81st best offense in the country?

Okay, take out the top offenses that both teams have played and the 2 common opponents (the stats against UF and UT are almost identical), and let's see the remainder of who LSU & Bama played:
Alabama -
Kent State = 119th offense
Penn State = 102th
North Texas= 105th
Vandy = 80th
Ole Miss = 104th
LSU -
MSU = 83rd
WVU = 17th
UK = 114th
Auburn = 72th
Bama average: 102
LSU average: 71.5
Plus, if you consider that Oregon (LSU's best) is ranked #4 and Arkansas (Bama's best) is ranked #20, lower than LSU's second best, it is telling, to be sure.
LSU has played MUCH better offenses than Bama has over the season.
Against common opponents, Bama has done a bit better, but the stats are very close:
LSU vs. Tennessee - 383 to 239 score 38-7
LSU vs. Florida - 453 - 213 score, 41-11
Alabama vs. Florida - 366 to 222; score 38-10
Alabama vs. Tennessee - 437 to 155; score 37-6
Average LSU 39.5-9.0 418 total offense, 226 total defense
Average Alabama 37.5-8.0 401.5 total offense, 188.5 total defense
So, Alabama has the edge in giving up 37.5 yards and 1.0 points per game less than LSU is.
LSU has the edge in offense averaging 16.5 yards per game and 2.0 points per game more.

Bama played 4 teams in the 100s and 1 at 96. LSU played 2 teams in the 100s (Northwestern State would be dead last, IMO) and 1 at 96.
LSU has played two offenses that are better than the best offense that Bama has faced. The second best offense that Bama has faced is Florida, which is the 4th best offense that LSU has faced.
Interesting. Stats also do not take into account that for the most part, LSU has stepped back into a softer, bend don't break defense once we've been up by 20. While, Bama has continually been attacking people.

Then what is the point of the original post? Are we supposed to believe those rankings are accurate for every team EXCEPT LSU?
I noticed he also failed to mention the high school team LSU played earlier. I think that would be considered a pretty weak offense
Posted on 11/4/11 at 12:34 pm to lprimo
What I get out of this is bama has played nobody except for an Arkansas team that should have losses to Vandy and almost losses to ole miss. Penn State has played nobody and they may not win another game this season.

No, we aren't supposed to believe the lies that Bama has the greatest defense ever when they have played no one except a one-dimensional Arkansas team with a terrible offensive line.
Look at the numbers against common opponents. They are very similar. Teams move the ball some. Any defense that is giving up 250 yards or less 8 games in is a great defense. When you factor in all the terrible offenses that Bama has played, it shows why Bama's numbers are so great.

I think you may be stretching this.
LSU has played better offenses, but the margin isn't that great.

Very convenient to not include Northwestern State, the worst team that either has played.

Whom ever turns the ball over...will lose...

There were no numbers to post, sorry just say there around 119th or so.

I agree we have played some crappy offenses, but this statement is not accurate. Brantley played the entire first half and the backup played the entire 2nd half. It was against LSU the next week that the true freshman 3rd string QB played.
