I read the write up on lsusports.net, but can anyone elaborate. Who stood out? How did the new guys perform? Pitching, defense, etc?

PURPLE RECORDS 6-1 WIN OVER GOLD IN GAME 1 OF INTRASQUAD WORLD SERIES

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU senior shortstop Austin Nola and junior second baseman Casey Yocom each collected two RBI Tuesday to lead the Purple to a 6-1 win over the Gold in Game 1 of the Purple-Gold World Series at Alex Box Stadium.

The intrasquad series continues with Game 2 at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, and it concludes with Game 3 at 3 p.m. Friday. The Purple-Gold World Series culminates LSU’s six-week fall practice period.

Yocom and Nola paced the Purple’s 10-hit attack, which also featured an RBI single by sophomore catcher Ty Ross, a pair of singles by sophomore third baseman Jake Barrios, and doubles by sophomore leftfielder Jackson Slaid, junior centerfielder Arby Fields and freshman first baseman Evan Powell.

Purple starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was credited with the win, working the first three innings of the six-inning game. The sophomore right-hander fired three shutout innings with five strikeouts.

“I thought we saw a very good ball game today,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “There were a lot of positives; Gausman was dominant on the mound, and the Purple team was able to scratch across some runs with clutch at-bats. We also played outstanding defense; Nola and Yocom turned a double play that was a tremendous effort.”

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Eades pitched the first two innings for the Gold, allowing two runs while recording three strikeouts. Junior rightfielder Mason Katz highlighted the Gold’s offensive output with a double off the wall against Gausman.

“I think this game was indicative of the type of team we’re going to be this year,” Mainieri said. “We have the chance to be dominant on the mound, play outstanding defense and be a hard-nosed, scrappy group of hitters at the plate. That formula worked well for the Purple team today.”

The Purple will start freshman right-hander Aaron Nola on the mound in Game 2 on Thursday, while the Gold will counter with freshman left-hander Cody Glenn.

They didn't play. Like all true Tigers, they were too preoccupied with the looming football game to have the want to do anything but watch ESPN and surf TD.
