I loved it. Realistic and the soundtrack was superb IMO

Soundtrack was good. Didn't thik it should have won an Oscar while Tron wasn't even nominated, but I digress.

However, I would like to be able to actually hear what the hell the dialogue is. Jesse Eisenberg talks fast as shite. A lot of scenes were in bars and clubs and every bit of dialogue needed to be heard. I couldn't hear them because the music and background noise of the bar was always drowning out the dialogue. That doesn't make any sense to me. I realize in real life, bars and night clubs can be loud, but this was a movie dammit.

I loving Sorkin despite his smugness, hell maybe even because of it. I can't help myself. Maybe I'm a bit smug. When it comes to Sorkin, I'm like a hybrid owner in that episode of South Park.

might as well get one of the best to do it.

I don't see why

they could just get some run-of-the-mill writer like every other movie uses, but make some awesome posters and charge 50% more for tickets

they'd make bank

I know it isn't based on actual events or anything so this might not apply to this thread, but the West Wing is one of my favorite shows ever.

That would make it perfect.

I think he writes some fricking killer dialogue, and like any pro at his level, can advance a story well.

There's just too much of an glow of self-importance in trying to attach yourself to historical moments of perceived significance. I especially don't like the expedited canonization of Jobs.

When approached, do you think he walked them around the room, speaking in a fast, clever manner?

It's Sorkin's way of showing you how much smarter he is than the average writer. He shoves a ton of tightly written dialogue into run-on sentences. Something that you'd never see in real life. It makes the viewer gasp and think, "Ooh, this writer is so cool."

He's a douche.

But for many movies, especially American ones, there is an emphasis on snappy dialogue and memorable turns of phrase. He's snugly in that tradition, not really above it.

Typical Sorkin:

quote:

Elliott: Anybody know why there's a 20-pound frozen turkey up in the light grid?
Dan Rydell: Dana, Elliot wants to know why there's a 20-pound frozen turkey in the light grid.
Dana Whitaker: It's 24 pounds.
Dan Rydell: I'll tell him that, but then he'll just want to know why there's a 24-pound frozen turkey in the light grid.
[Dan leaves, Elliot comes in afterwards]
Elliott: Why is there a 24-pound frozen turkey up in the light grid?

The rapid fire repetition of the frozen turkey in the light rack line is supposed to be witty or something. Meh. He's no Gilmore Girls writer.

I would imagine his fan base is littered with liberals. He just can't help attacking conservative mid American lifestyles.

Studio 60 was a huge pile of garbage because he missed his soap box (the west wing) and he wanted to squeeze his liberal dogma into a show about SNL which simply didn't work and thus the EARLY cancellation.

I liked Sports Night. I think West Wing is one of the best tv shows ever produced.

I think Studio 60 was pure crap and I think The Social Network is easily one of the most over rated films of the last several years. I didn't hate SN but at the same time it wasn't some brilliant movie.

I feel like Token laughing at Tyler Perry right now because I actually find that rather humourous.

Which is what I mean when I say I don't like movies or shows that seem too "written".

I know, I know - you'd think my love for Mamet would be a violation of this ideal, but it isn't, as Mamet actually uses meter and dialogue to make a greater meta-statement on human existence as well as the medium itself.

I can see what y'all mean by this. Just one of those things that comes down to taste, I suppose. Elmore Leonard has a good quote that goes something like,"If it sounds like writing, then it's time to re-write it." Whereas a writer like Sorkin or a David Foster Wallace oil up their prose and enjoy showing off. I like both schools, but I suppose different personalities rub people the wrong way.

Which also leads me to believe, as you mention with Mamet, that most people can also enjoy writers in the two camps of minimalism or verbal plumage.

If they stopped being so making fun of worthy, he'd probably write about something else.

Haters gonna hate.

And I disagree entirely. He presented a balanced spectrum, often showing how the elitist, a-hole, liberal writers were wrong/dumb/offbase.

Of course he threw in his liberal political views, but after all, it is a show about a bunch of West Coast, Californian comedy writers.

Well how do explain West Wing? Which I have caught on reruns a bunch and like. But it was full of liberalism. Perhaps Law & Order and Boston Legal topped it, but not much else.
