I think the better possibility is that he waits until spring to sign. That would still be a win for LSU, especially if Trent Johnson can put together a good season.

If not, the new coach would still have an opportunity to land him, unlike when Greg Monroe signed in the fall before Brady was fired and Johnson hired in spring.

Gathers will be in Baton Rouge this weekend for the season-opening basketball game and the homecoming football game.

I heard once again this weekend from a couple of people reaffirming that he is LSU's to lose at this point.

I haven't put much stock in this Gathers story, because it sounded like a lot of wishful thinking from LSU fans. But this is now getting some buzz on the national level, from non-LSU people:

This is from the Rivals main basketball recruiting board:

Rumor: Ricardo Gathers will not sign this week Reply
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Im hearing out of his camp that he plans not to sign to St. Johns this week. It gives the fans of Louisiana hope that he might still be considering LSU.......

If Tigerbait attempted to cover basketball at all this info would be a lot easy to ascertain.

Or any LSU-related media. Anyone covering LSU sports should be all over this story.

Tony Gonzalez
Jimmy Graham

All were standout basketball players in college.

That's a stretch.

Gonzo averaged like 6 points and 5 rebounds in his junior year at Cal.

Graham did nothing of note, really.

Gates was good though. Interestingly, I read that he went to Michigan State to play under Saban. But Saban wouldn't let him play bball too. Crazy.

I've heard some other word that UConn may be involved. Hopefully that is not the case.

It appears that Gathers is considering not signing in the early period and waiting to see how the season plays out. If he is considering UConn, St. Johns and LSU, all three of those have some big question marks that could get answered this season.

1. Trent Johnson's job security is at stake and could be cemented with a good year.
2. Lavin's health is an issue. He was not at their season opener last night.
3. Calhoun was supposedly considering retirement before this season and didn't. He could retire after this season.

Regarding LSU, it is my belief that Gathers likes LSU, especially Brent Scott, but was gun-shy about committing to LSU with Johnson's job in jeopardy. I think LSU has done a good job of convincing him to at least wait until the spring to see how the season plays out.

The signing period starts tommorrow, so we will see.

Seems like the smart thing to do and bodes well for LSU IMO.

ESPN was streaming either yesterday or Sunday that Lavin will NOT be coaching this year as he recovers from Prostate Cancer. I'm sure that doesn't help St. John's situation...

Calhoun retires after this year IMO, he has a great team but Lamb and Drummond are gone after this year and they are going to be ineligible for the 2013 tournament due to their APR. Makes me feel a little uncomfortable about LSU's chances though if he goes from committed to a dirty school in St. John's to considering maybe the dirtiest program in the country in UConn. Hopefully Jordy is right.

UCONN and St. Johns are so sketchy right now. UCONN is basically the poster child for why you cheat in college basketball.
