A&M, Missouri, and Vandy need to play someone that weekend. Since A&M would be in the West and the other two in the East, that rules out A&M playing either Missouri or Vandy annually on that weekend.

Why couldn't ATM and Mizzou be permanent cross-division and play on Thanksgiving weekend every year? Sorry if I missed where addressed this.

Because A&M fans care as much about Mizzou as say LSU cares about ohhh I'll just say Rutgers. It would be a forced "Rivalry" and Blah.

LSU vs A&M would be very similar to Texas A&M vs Tex. Recruits, nationally recognized teams, co-worker trash talk, etc. etc.

A&M and Missouri as cross-divisional rivals would be fine, but that's not the kind of game you want to play Thanksgiving weekend. Do Arkansas and South Carolina play Thanksgiving weekend? No. If you're going to play that weekend, it needs to be a big enough draw to get folks to interrupt their holidays. A Missouri-A&M matchup wouldn't set the pulses racing for either fan base, having neither proximity or history to rely upon. It would be as contrived as Arkansas vs. LSU.

There cannot be a cross divisional game played the last week of the season. I think actually you can't play a cross division game the last two weeks of the season.

The reason behind it is the SEC doesn't want to have two teams play on Saturday and then potentially play again in the SECCG the following Saturday.

If you look at all of the big rivalry games played during the last week of the season, they are all either within division (Auburn/Bama, LSU-Arky, MSU/Ole Miss, Kentucky/Tenn) or outside of conference (UGA/GT, USCe/Clemson, UF/FSU).
