This Year's Defensive Mindset

I've been calling this year's defense "the Asylum."
These guys play like they've just broken out of a damn insane asylum... especially Mathieu and Montgomery. This is the most intense D certainly since the '06 LSU/Auburn game. It's a lot of fun to watch. There's still room to improve (which is plain scary).

yeah we fly around
i do sometimes wish we had 1 big thumper at DT, esp for a team like bama. we'll see if we can penetrate their OL
i hope this investment in LB talent pays off down the road. that's easily the weakness of the D

This is certainly what the coaching staff had in mind for Davenport. Brockers is playing well, but right now the strength on the inside is more about numbers than one real stud.

Yeah. I can't quite figure it out right now, but you have to hope Feist, Louis, Phillips?, Devall? will come in hungry. Minter will be solid... maybe not spectacular..
The LB corps still has issues losing TEs and RBs over the middle, and opposing QBs just haven't taken advantage yet.

our defense suffocates you into making mistakes and we flat out force turnovers on a regular basis with consistency. it's not lucky, it's not a trend, it's our style of play.
funny how we really didn't play great football yesterday and still won by 31 pts. Our largest win over UT ever. People still complain however it's better than winning the way we did last year.

Exactly. The D had a bit of a down day fundamentally but the fire was still there. I thought Mingo had a very good day as well.

for how small our LBs are, they aren't that great in coverage. it's maddening

We seem to be a different Defense than we were to start the season though, not as much blitzing and aggressiveness... they look to stay home and follow the play

Yeah, I think they get caught spectating at times which happens with as good as the DEs and DBs are. They've gotta get some confidence, and maybe it'll take Baker being a bit more vocal. I just don't think there's a lot of competition in the LB corps like in the secondary and on the line.
If we see it though, you have to know Chavis sees it.

I think we are seeing what we can get away with. I think we are content to load the box, stop the run, and when they go to passing, let the front four generate the pressure while our incredible secondary wreaks havoc.
We really havent had to blitz very much to be effective on defense. Ponder that for a second. We are one of the best defenses in the nation and we havent seen too much blitzing. I believe until we are actually forced into a situation where we need to make an aggressive play, we will continue to do what works. It seems Chavis doesnt believe any team can consistently move the ball the entire field the entire game. Sure a drive here or there, but not consistently.
Now Tenn. gave us their best to start the game, but we were in control and winning the entire time. The game was never in question. Oregon and West Virginia both gave us something to worry about at one time each game and we crushed their spirit soon after with suffocating aggressive defense.

This defense looks more focused and hungrier than the defensive units the last couple of years. They want to play in New Orleans for a championship.

Hatcher, is he not a liability? Surely Muncie cannot be worse.

Why show blitz packages when we got dick Saban watching our game film each week. I like the do just enough to win thought process. It helps us.

Angola Gang good name but not for this team. Comparing college students to convicts will not go over well with everyone.

I agree - I think fans are in the too close to the trees/forest situation to be able to dig deeper and to look at successful implementation of a plan.

The longer the ball is in the air, the better I feel.
The DB's are doing work back there.

The only chance teams have is with underneath routes to backs and tightends. I think this is what LSU will see from Bama. Quick slants to Maze as well.

This defense is still vulnerable to power running games.
I would love to see LSU employ a 5 man front with 3 DTs and 2 DEs (Mingo,Montgomery) against Bama and get Hatcher the hell outta there on running downs. Force TR to have to run outside and have faith in our DBs to take care of business if they pass.
