first off, was this the hit (one and only) that caused his concussion? LINK

does he have a history with concussions?

obviously any concussion (even mild ones) are serious, but does it seem like he is being overly cautious with his return to hockey? I don't know anything about the situation so that's why I'm asking....just seems like other hockey and football players return to action much quicker. He's just now practicing how many months later??

IIRC he has post-concussion syndrome. Some people take a year or more to completely recover.

so was that the one and only concussion he has ever had? Cause if so it didn't look too serious (didn't lose consciousness, no rigamortis, etc). Serious concussions like Tebow, Jahvid Best, etc didn't miss months of games, much less practice. Maybe football players are just dumb and Crosby is doing the smart thing by taking time off

Lilja missed a whole year because of a concussion a few years back.

He took another hit the very next game and has been out since. I don't think he's had any concussions prior to that.

the post concussion stuff was pretty frightening. i can't remember where i saw it (or read it), but it described how it was way more than the standard post-concussion stuff like headaches, sensitivity to light, etc. his hand-eye coordination was screwed up, as well as his spatial awareness -- like he didn't have a handle on where his hands were in space if he wasn't looking at them.

He would be playing if it wasn't serious. He actually considered retiring.

LOC does not determine grade of concussion anymore. It is all based on symptoms, the longer those symptoms last the worse that concussion was. Return to play is also based on being asymptomatic.

I blame the Pens' medical staff. If Crosby got a concussion against the Caps, why was he out on the ice six days later? Six days later, he received this hit from Hedman:

Honestly, I don't think the Steckel hit gave Crosby a concussion, or there is no way he is playing less than a week later. It was the Hedman hit, but it's a better story if its another instance in the Pens-Caps blood feud.

hockey concussions are on a different severity level than football concussions due to to the speed of the game, but that hit didnt look that bad compared to some of the other big hits around the league
