Did we shame the WVU offense?

I know the popular topic is that JJ is returning to destroy our team, but I'm gonna go back to our last game and look at something.
1st half winding down, we're up 20-7, and are absolutely in control in a hostile environment. I'm sure WVU was aware that they weren't matching up, that we were the more dominant team, yada yada (that's inside their heads, not that they would quit).
Penalty late in the half on 3rd down; and what do we do? Force the punt and run the clock out?
NOOO. Les basically says "HA. I spit on your offense. Take the penalty and give them 3rd down again". I'm pretty sure we all wondered WTF on that call; and then T Matheiu proceeds to tip/intercept their next play and we score another TD.
Now, our defense was playing well, and it did work out that play, but WVU has a pretty good offense. I have to think their coaches made that series a big point of emphasis at the half, that we were "laughing" at them and thought we were gonna totally blow them out, and called out each offensive player to earn some respect back. And once they got the ball back in the 2nd half, they sure did just that.
I know the missed TD pass swung some momentum away from us, but I wonder how much that 1st half exchange caused them to take each offensive down like their lives depended on it.

Are you trying to say that LSU erred in unintentionally rousing WVU's offense from its 1st half complacency?

All I'm gonna say is that Oregon ran the screen play stuff because that's all that would work against us. Holgorsen in that Feldman article talked about our speed to the edges, and to the ball, in general.
Against LSU, they have some playcalls where if the initial read isn't there, Smith can check it to an edge screen. In the Feldman article, they talked about being unable to mimic and/or replicate Mathieu's edge speed or LSU's overall team speed on defense.
After that play by Mathieu that resulted in the tip ball/INT/Return to the 1, they didn't run anything to the edge the rest of the night.
We adjusted to give them the yards they got. WVU didn't do anything like they're typical offense because we took it away. They are a FAR more aggressive offense in terms of their verticality.

If you could make the call for LSU, are you gonna refuse 4th down to give them another play?
If you were Holgorson, the way it played out, would YOU yell at your players- "they're kicking your asses up and down. They're rubbing it in your faces. Don't even take a punt, because they think they can pick the ball off and run it in for a damn score. And you know what, they DID. Are you gonna let them keep that up? FORGET the score, and make them remember they played you this half"
Not to take it too deeply (like Les meant anything by it), but I just wonder if that was the result- that they played the 2nd half like we were coming to run up the score, beat up their cheerleaders and burn down their stadium.

No. They racked up over 500 yards of offense.

I'm pretty sure any coach would have done that in this position, it was quite obvious we were going to go for it on 4th and we had been somewhat moving the ball. Miles didn't exactly pull the craziest move there. There is something like 47 seconds on the clock, give WVU a shot at a first down or make them throw it on 3rd and 19?
That said we had the game within 7 at one point and a Special Teams play broke our spirits. I would say LSU Sp. Teams and Offense shamed us, I think the WVU offense is the only that kept us relevant till the 3rd, so no, no shaming.

quote:they did, but after watching saturday and thinking back to auburn last year, i think its fair to say, against elite offenses, we use a strategy of giving up lots of yards, but doing a good job of limiting points. once is a fluke, twice is a trend
They put up 500 yards...

And that means what? Sometimes, fans and the media read too much into stats....If you play against any team that has dam near 90 pass attempts, the yards will rack up.. LSU won the game by a large margin...
THATS ALL THAT MATTERS..

YOu were going to go for it on 4th and six deep in your own territory when you were losing by thirteen? That seems unlikely.

90 pass attempts? I thought they had 62?
Moreover, do you really believe that LSU's defense wanted to allow two touchdowns that cut the deficit to just six? Was that the strategy?

Given the fact we were down 13 to the #2 team and the clock was somewhat winding down, I'd say so. Seems like a good idea to get some momentum prior to the half. That's my take anyways.

Well, i dont care how good your dfence is, you wont stop everybody you encounter on the field....If you've ever played the game, you would know that..
And why is this even an issue...The game is history...time to move on.....

500 + is not shaming an offense period.....

At that place on the field, at that point in the game, with the way our defense was playing, I can go either way. You give them the opportunity to make a big play (or yourself the opportunity to have blown coverage and give them a big gain). On the other hand, stopping them on the next play gives you a much better chance to try to score before half.
There is an adage: Keep in on their side of the field as much as possible.
That's especially true at the end of the half or the end of the game (if it's close).
