I hear this all the time from the A&M fans out here. I say something about LSU and they fire back with "you didn't even go to school there". What they, and others, don't understand is LSU is a religion in it's own right in Southern Louisiana.
A&M doesn't have fans, they have Alumni and students. Other than that small group, no one gives 2 shits about A&M. The reason for that is because Texas has UT, the Cowboys, the Texans, had the Oilers, the Spurs, the Mavs, the Stars.
Southern Louisiana has LSU and the Saints, and most didn't claim the Saints until 2005 anyway when they nearly lost them.
Baton Rouge is a small town and LSU is a major university. Even if you didn't go there, you have friends and family who did. Everyone has some sort of tie to the school. It's not like other places and can't be compared. Spend some time getting to know people in and around BR. Babies are wearing LSU gear before they can walk or talk. My kid is 3 and has more LSU cups and shirts than I do, and I live in Texas.
LSU is a way of life for us, it's the only thing we had to cheer for growing up.
I didn't go to LSU because I chose not to, not because I couldn't. I am looking at going back to school though for EE and LSU is on my short list.

I'm an alumnus and I don't care that you didn't go to LSU so long as you don't get sand in your vag and threaten to walk out of the stadium if JJ takes the field. As a student, I stayed until the bitter end of a lot of games when we got skullfricked during Curley's tenure.

Not that students and alumni can't be shitty fans. But they are generally less disloyal to a school they've invested a lot of time and money in and learned to love for more than its athletic programs.

But some of the biggest LSU fans I know aren't alumni. But they would have gone to LSU had life dealt them a better deck of cards in their youth. And some like my stepmom eventually enrolled at LSU in their 40s.

It shouldn't bother any LSU alumni that people who didn't attend LSU think of our team as their team too. Isn't that the function of building a big arse stadium in the first place?

Maybe a fan's kid will come to LSU or they will join the TAF or donate to the LSU Foundation. How could that possibly bother an LSU alumni?

We are the flagship university of Louisiana and anyone with any connections to the state, including the limited knowledge one might obtain from an occasional viewing of True Blood, is welcome aboard!

I don't give a shite. I guarantee you that not all fans of a university are all alumni. Don't see what the big fuss is about that.

I went to LSU, but frankly, I became an LSU fan before I ever came to LSU. I was born in Cuba and grew up with a Cajun family..they had gone to LSU.

I hardly spoke much English at the time but was listening at the 1966 Cotton Bowl on the radio...
LSU - ARK.

I became a fan that day.

had I not attended LSU, I would have remained a fan...
so I welcome all the cheer for LSU.

i spent my first 28 years in La and never went to a game or even wanted to, so i guess i wasn't really a fan. i coached high school football in NELA for 3 years and when some of the guys i coached against started playing at LSU, i started following the program more closely. went to my first game in 07 against Va Tech (we were living in VA at the time). been a fan since.

I'm not an LSU alum, my wife is. I didn't go to LSU because I had a baseball scholarship to a smaller in-state school that I earned a degree from. I went to my first football game at age 8 and have lost count of how many I've attended since. Even when I was in college I would come into Baton Rouge during the fall and attend home games in Baton Rouge. My point is that even though I attended college somewhere else, being from south Louisiana, LSU is in my blood. I have uncles, aunts, and cousins that have attended LSU that don't follow the school like I do. It's my choice to follow something, to support something, and to be a fan of something. For me, it's LSU. Don't get me wrong I still love and support my alma mater. I talk about how I enjoyed my time there all the time. But I'm an LSU fan, it's what I choose to support. If someone confronts me about not being a "true fan" because my undergrad didn't come from LSU, I'll simply say that they're the type of people that make our fan base look bad. Simple as that.

what you do not get it ?

it's ego. "because someone went to LSU they have to be a bigger/better fan"

if we took from LSU all the money donated by non-LSU attending donors, LSU would be in serious trouble.

from "fans" in Dry Prong,

I actually know where that is!! hahaha!!

I spent 2 years at LA TECH, and I went to LSUA for one semester.....Figured out during 2 summer Humanitarian Missions (1-Belize and 1-Honduras) that I didnt want to go to college, and that I wanted to spend my days in the Louisiana National Guard. I have been in for 15 1/2 years, on Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) since November 2001, and I have season tickets for LSU Football games (I live 2 hours away). I generally attend about 1/4 of the LSU baseball home games each year that I am not deployed to Afghanistan or busy with Natural Disasters here at home. Does it make me less of a fan because I do not have a Degree from LSU?? Absolutely not. I have also met many LSU fans in my traveling that did not attend but are fans for various reasons. There is nothing like being deployed and running into other fans out there that support your team. Come in from a mission, watch the live game on AFN at about 230 in the morning, have some coffee and 5 hour energy drinks, and a few red bulls and get right back on patrols!!

Let me ask this of you - If you went to(are going to) school at Michigan and LSU played Michigan , which team would you support and why?

LSU because it is where I am from and who I have cheered for my entire life, but I would be sitting the the Michigan student section because of the ticket price

I didn't take classes at LSU, but I was born in Baton Rouge when my dad was a student there. He graduated in 1950. He could have played football but the coach would not give him a scholarship. Our cousins, the Blakewoods (E.G. and sons), attended LSU (E.G., Sr. was on the 1922 football team)and still live in Louisiana. After Dad graduated, we lived in DeRidder, where we listened to LSU games on the radio. I became an LSU fan then and have been one ever since. My "hero" was some guy named Cannon who wore #20 and ran a punt back 89 yards against Ole Miss on a Halloween night, but I have no real claim to LSU. Perhaps it's not in the experience, but I have a DNA connection. Now, if I HAD to be a fan of where I attended school, I'd have to say The University of Mobile, USM, the University of South Alabama, and Alabama. But I am not a Bama fan (though married to one)!
