I once saw an NFL Films interview with Dan Reeves. He claimed that Don Meredith punctured a lung against the Browns in a 1968 game and kept playing. According to Reeves, on the plane back to Dallas from Cleveland Meredith nearly died. The story was hushed up by the team and league for PR reasons.

Dandy Don retired a few weeks later, only 30 years old.
