Did Michigan ever really wanted Les miles?

I'll hang up and let you guys answer.

It was then and will always be my opinion that if Herbie hadn't jumped the gun and forced Miles to adamantly deny the job, thus forcing Michigan to look elsewhere, Miles would be coaching at Michigan right now.

Which is why we should all love Herbie unconditionally.

Miles doesn't seem to be the type of man who allows others to make his decisions for him.

I think Miles is a polarizing figure. My guess is that there was a faction of Michigan alumni who would have done anything to get him, but another faction of the hoidy-toidy types who were probably against him. Thankfully.
The stars really have aligned in keeping him with the Tigers all of these years. After the Ole Miss game two years ago or the Tennessee game last year, the fan base would have gladly seen him go. Now, not so much.

Perhaps, but anyone "against" a NC coach as he was in 07 and a 62-17, NR #8 coach, and in the Top 5 for winning percentage among BCS schools as he was in 2010 is college football/SEC mentally challenged. imo

I seem to remember that Les was upset with Michigan for leaking the news to Herbie. Supposedly he had told the folks at UM to keep it quiet until after the SEC Championship game. When he was told of the chaos the morning of the game, he was beyond mad. Hence his demeanor at his brief pregame press conference.

That faction was named Lloyd Carr.

2007: No
2010: Yes
Don't forget that when all the stuff hit the fan in 2007, Les Miles had still never won a conference title, much less a national title, even while playing with "Nick Saban's players".

I'm sure Herbie also was glad to do anything to help keep Les from coaching against his Alma Mater on a yearly basis.
Les would have made Michigan relevant again, which was bad for Ohio State.

They probably did, but it was a lateral move at best and he and his family are settled and happy. They would have had to offer a lot more money to make him move and they just counted on his loyalty to Michigan to get him to move. Poorly played by Michigan, but hey, they are doing very well right now.

quote:That isn't what I said or what I believe happened. Forcing someone's hand is not the same as making a decision for them. Even if UM and Miles weren't in real "talks" there are all kinds of ways of informal communication.

So Les and UM are in these preliminary stages, Herbie gets wind of it and spills the beans far too prematurely. Les is in a BCS title hunt and knows it and he isn't willing to sacrifice the present for the future, plus he is pissed. So we get what we got before the SEC championship game.
This is all theory and conjecture of course, but it isn't too far fetched. Much less far fetched than the only other story I've heard which was someone claiming to be Desmond Howard texted Herbie and Herbie didn't feel the need to get better confirmation before going on National TV and blabbing.
