My 2 cents on yesterday's gameday experience (long)

I was prepared to have young and old WVU fans dropping F-bombs at my family and maybe even get assaulted based on the rumors and reference from others (including family who unfortunately live in WV). However, the tailgating experience was very pleasant. I had a parking pass in the blue lot, and received help in getting a "good" spot to get out easily from some locals. Walked around stadium, and down to the student rec center without incident.
A couple of students even helped us out by explaining the PRT system so we could go to the "downtown" campus to get some good pictures ( much more scenic/historic campus for those who did not make it down there). The remainder of the tailgating was very cordial and very SEC like (albeit smaller for the most part, and yes I've been to ALL the SEC stadiums).
I was even caught off guard when I went to buy some food with my kids, when a younger alumnus (24-26 year old range) would not let me pay for my food, and picked up the tab. Said he appreciated my bringing the kids to the game, and can't wait until he has his own and can do the same. I guess he was kind of paying it forward.
After kickoff, it got ugly!! I sat in the lower bowl of a WVU section, and was totally shocked. The pure hatred and mean spirited taunts at players and fans was brutal. I've let out some "kick their arse" chants in my day, but never have I seen the people yelling for specific physical harm to anyone so much. "f$@!ing hurt him", "I hope he dies", "pussy players", all being yelled by anyone from 16-66!! Simply amazing.
I almost got into a fight when one of our first injuries occurred and some local started into the BS about trying to slow the tempo. I saw the injury, and i guarantee you that I would not be walking for a week if that happened to me. I called the guy out to have a little respect, and he started to get in my face with his crap even more. Some other WVU fans pulled him off me and actually backed me and told me that the guy is known in the section as being an a-hole.
Dude didn't say much more during the game after some more around us told him to STFU (OK, one bright spot duringgame). But when the boo's came when other players got hurt, it just showed the class level they are on. My interpretation is that they are like that slightly awkward kid who always tried so hard to fit in, and had something to prove. Actually had the goods to keep up, but did not know how to play the game, so he was left hanging with the non-descript crowd. Then of course all this just drives the hatred toward everyone
After game, I experienced the worst gameday traffic ever. Took us 2 hours to get to Fairmont 15 miles away. Contraflow, traffic cops, extended traffic signals? I guess they have never heard of them.
Anyway, sorry for the length of thus post, but got back this afternoon (luckily only 4.5 hour drive back to Cincinnati), and had to get this off my chest. I'd go back if I had the chance, but knowing what I know now, would do thing differently to enjoy the game.
Geaux Tigers!!!

Probably should have changed subject after I wrote it. Started out short, but thoughts kept flowing..

man, this was my experience exactly (see my post in the other thread)....exceedingly nice people in general, but there are just some bad seeds there that want to do nothing but fight like elementary school kids...unfortunately, those folks get kinda concentrated inside of the football stadium...
they should plant a bunch of undercover cops there and crack down hard, IMO...

That's not quite as bad as Oxford, MS.

What would you do differently next time?

I agree. I actually saw some cop around the Blue Lot making sure thing were on the level, but once the game started, the gloves came off. Lucky that the people around us knew this guy, and helped diffuse the situation.

Serious question: In your estimation, how much of a role did the availability of beer play in the in-stadium behavior you witnessed?
I know, I know. But they actually sell it there during the game....just wondering.

glad you had a good time Nick...i talked to a lot LSU fans most of the day, including 5-6 who tailgated around us...You guys are a lot of fun...

Actually, I've been to Oxford 4-5 times and found that parking on north side helps getting out of traffic. May be a bit longer, but you are moving, and it takes less time.
As far as what I would do differently in Morgantown, I would have not accepted the free tix from family in WVU section and kept my tix in LSU section. Again, knowing what I know now, I would probably just let it go when their fans start the ill spirited verbal barrage. It's just the way they are, and I would not engage.

Thanks HOLT. Like I said, tailgating was great, and even my kids (4, and 9 years old) had a good time. I think the alcohol factor (before and during game), as well as the intensity of the situation just brought some over the edge.

I get the same feeling. The state and the players feel like a bunch of regrets, knowing they have no respect and big schools (like LSU) never recruited them out of high school. Hence they always have a chip on their shoulder.
I think a lot of the trash talking was initiated by their players, who are under the misguided notion that talking shite somehow enabled them to negate the skill/talent disparity on the field.

It is a shame for them to be honest. All in all, they are a good team with a passionate fanbase. Unfortunately, due to geography (and other issues), they are at a disadvantage to make the next step. There is always the Pitt, UVA, Ohio St., VT nearby to take away recruits, exposure, TV$$. I do wish them well and hope they win the Big East.

... took the view from 'high up' on the North Entrance and the WVU's taigating sort of looked like a Somalian refugee tent city ... just saying.
As for that freaking scoreboard

Glad you enjoyed the experience Nick. As far as your in-game experience, I hear the same thing fairly frequently. It is a shame and embarrassment to our fan base.
I had a blast in Baton Rouge and also had a great time interacting with all the LSU fans, both last year and this year. I agree, they really do need to boost security in Mountaineer Field because it makes for an awful gameday experience if you are near an idiot.
Traffic in Morgantown has always been a pain mainly because of infrastructure. Town is way too small (area-wise) for the amount of people that are there.
Wish we could have done a little more on the field to garner you guys' respect, but your team made it awfully difficult. Best of luck this year.

Problem with Morgantown is that there literally is like 2 roads in and out of town. The other thing is it's impossible to get lost in Morgantown because all the roads pretty much end out back on the same road after a while, so there you see how that could be awful for traffic. Typically though if you wait an hour you're good to go.

Jp WVU, I will tell you this bud, your team played way better than anything I was expecting.. WV has my respect... IMO WV left everything on the field, fought hard and played really well.

Thanks for the rundown for those of us who did not get a chance to experience it. We all know every fan base has idiots that ruin the experience for everyone. I can put up with most of what you wrote during the game (because you will see it in every stadium) but the lack of football IQ regarding the booing was unacceptable.
