So, WVU runs 4/5 WR sets almost constantly according to Doug Moreau this morning

If that's the case, I'm pretty excited to see what this secondary can do against something that wide open. Not to mention we'll get to see a lot of line play with no TE chipping our DEs constantly. I also listened to Holgerson a bit yesterday talk about his offense. Dude sounds like he's got his shite together he just needs the horses to run it. He talked a lot about tempo and rhythm and how you can't let the defense figure out either one. They run a lot of quick hits, screens and slants so this will be an entirely different look than anything this defense has faced so far. Our defense will get tested and it can do nothing but make us better for down the road for a team like Arkansas. Oh, and an impressive state to note: Geno Smith has 539 pass attempts in 3 years and only 9 INTs. His completion % has been in the high 60s his whole career. This kid makes good decisions and doesn't turn the ball over much. Our defense is going to get more tested than many, including me, would like to believe. I can't wait.

Very good post...I really see the "D" stepping up once again in this game.

If they go 4 to 5 WR sets, it will play into our favor. We still have our 4 D-lineman that will wreck havoc on Geno (more than he has seen all year) + we get to take LB's off the field and insert DB's (advantage LSU).

Plus, W.V. has to find a way to stop our offense. Yes I said it, stop our offense.

As long as our offense marches down the field on their weak defense, we got this.

Ware and Ford will keep the ball our of Geno's hands.

Meh. Oregon does a lot of the same things.

Not really. Oregon's main scheme is to run the ball. They only pass when they can't run. WVU is going to throw the ball all over the field the entire game and might now even have 15 rush attempts.

i agree..i think Lee goes off tomorrow night...3TDs/250 yds/0 ints
D line pressures Geno all day...extra DBs in for LBs swarm and stifle the pass...i predict 3-4 ints by our secondary
T-Rex decapitates 2 WVU recievers

Would be awesome but that would be almost half of what Smith has thrown in 3 years. The kid doesn't make many stupid mistakes.

Yeah a run first mentality is Oregons main scheme but Lsu forced them to throw almost 60 times making them very similar to what we should see from WVU. Difference is Oregon did it with better athletes.

Not a better passing QB though.

Geno is better, but not by a whole lot.
Thing is, Oregon at least had the threat of a big-play running game. West Virginia doesn't.

a lot of incomplete passes will slow that tempo down

As a passer, I respectfully disagree. Not even close IMO.

I agree, but that was not the point of our discussion.

Oregon is a run first team, passing is not their strong point, so bragging on stopping their passing game isn't really the best argument. WVU is built around the passing game and is waiting for the Freshmen RB's to start carrying their weight.

I don't think being able to defend against Oregon passing 60 times is the same as 4-5 Wide 60 times against WVU. Thats our mantra. Oregon was apparently forced into it.

Either way I expect a good game that is won very late in the game.... somewhere around 27-24 or so.

our secondary is the strength of our team. Oregon and MSU attacked our weakness, if you want to call it that. You guys are running full force into the teeth of this LSU Defense. Think about this: we've played 3 running teams to date and our top 5 tacklers are ALL secondary players. Our 5-6 man secondary we'll have on the field are all going to be playing pro ball. You guys are running into a meat-grinder.

I disagree. Miles' gameplan against a team with a high tempo, high-octane offense is easy; keep the offense off the field. We'll see an offensive gameplan very similar to what we did to Oregon. Take advantage of the undersized/young defense and run, run, run, run, run, run, play action, run, run, run, run, play action, run, run, run, pass, run, run, run, play action, etc

Defense will probably play a lot of zone blitzes in the mustang package.

The threat of a running game is very much related to how we defend the passing game.
That was the point of my comment.
