Did the ACC pull the trigger too soon?

The SEC seems to be taking the right course by talking to schools, but making things contingent on circumstances. Texas A&M isn't even a done deal if I understand things correctly.
This whole thing started by A&M being pissed at the LHN. If that somehow gets taken care of, they probably would rather stay in the Big XII.
Colorado pulled the trigger too soon last year, trying to stay in front of the realignment. I wonder if they regretted that move once the Big XII stayed together.

I don't think they had much of a choice... they know what's about to happen, and they would have been raided. The BIG, PAC and SEC are not rushing into anything because they want to get the most value they can. That means feeling everybody out and trying to prepare for every scenario.

not only that, Colorado was on the short end of the Big 12 revenue sharing. Pac 12 gives them an equal split.

pretty sure they increased their TV revenue a good deal (like possibly 2x) by making the move
they need it, b/c their ADept was almost bankrupt

Colorado had wanted in to the Pac-10 since before the Big 12 was formed but the Pac-10 wouldn't have them then. They definitely aren't upset about their decision.

I think it's a done deal. If OU, OSU and UT aren't leaving the Big 12 then Baylor will sign the waiver not to sue. The SEC already stated they are working on the 2012 schedules with the assumption that Texas A&M is part of the SEC.
Texas A&M leaderships will not go back to the Big 12 as the backlash from fans and alumni would be too great.

If they were to either take down the LHN, or get equal revenue from it/overall equal revenue sharing, that would be a huge victory banner. I think they could go back with their head high.
Still, it does seem like the A&M->SEC is only the lawsuit hurdle away.

That's certainly obvious now, but at the time it seemed like it was preemptive to keep from being left in the cold.
They ended up paying a fairly sizable buyout if I remember correctly.
In hindsight, it was a great move for them - no question.

A month ago, the ACC was looking to be raided by the SEC and forced to be jumbled into the remains of the BigEast. Today they stand to be the 4th superconference, with the BigEast teams taking orders from them (as opposed to sharing equally with the BE).
From the SEC's perspective, this is bad.
From the ACC's perspective, this is good.
So I'll ask you: Did the ACC pull the trigger too soon?

Adding Syracuse and Pitt didn't keep that from happening. Getting everybody to agree to the $20m buyout did. What's keeping them from being poached now?

by adding syracuse and pitt, they show that they are an attractive destination and therefore stable
by creating the $20 million buyout, they believe they show that they are stable
however, syracuse and pitt may just be hedge in case they do get poached

I think for Texas A&M it is more than LHN. They just do not trust Texas. In their eyes, Texas will always look out for Texas without any regards for their conference mates. Texas A&M has no desire to remain in a conference where nobody seems to be able to trust anybody.

Cuse & Pitt are great additions for the ACC. If they add two more schools, those schools can go into a division with Florida State and the original eight members can go into a division together, thereby restoring the traditional rivalries.
ACC is a basketball conference first and Pitt and Cuse are basketball schools first. And ACC traditionalists want to go back to the old double round robin with Maryland, UVA, the four NC schools, Clemson, and GT.

disagree... the ACC's preemptive move w/ Pitt & Syracuse made their football schools, in particular FSU rethink what they're getting into. If they take UCONN and Rutgers, FSU is ready for the taking. (if that is the direction the SEC wants).
