NCAA's Role In Conference Expansion

I don't know if this has been discussed here, but I remember a year or so ago a lot of teams were tired of the NCAA and their bs rulings. ESPN analysts were saying there was no way teams would withdraw from the NCAA unless a bunch of them got together and left. So does anyone think that 4 conferences would go to 16 teams and tell the NCAA to go frick themselves? I don't even know the legality of such a move, but I was just curious if there was more to this expansion thing than it appears?

TV money is driving this and nothing else. This said, I think it is inevitable that one of two things will eventually happen:
o The haves will form a new division that is a subset of the FBS, or
o The haves will form a new athletic association.
TV money will drive this also as it will be the only way to retain all that money with the haves. This new div won't just be composed of 64 teams however, but probably around 72-80 schools. It is still probably a few years away, at least until the BCS comes up for renewal.

This is another interesting "tip" that they will eventually leave the NCAA. The Big Ten already has a network and the SEC is starting one next year. I figured it wouldn't happen right away, but like you think that this move will be made and sooner than later.

If you read the article, the schools already got the NCAA out of their football TV money, with a lawsuit back in the 80's. The NCAA makes all their money on the hoops tourney now. But if enough schools leave that would totally kill their cash cow, which is why they are so lax on enforcement.

Yes and no wrt getting them out of football money. Yes the org is out of it, but not all the have nots. NonAQs get to participate in the BCS. There is probably really big money in a playoff, but to do so you would have to involve the NCAA and would have to give access to all the conferences in some manner. This makes the playoff option pretty risky. They have to separate the haves from the have nots in order to manage that risk by retaining all the revenue.

Tell that to Enes Kanter. I just think you will see the NCAA make major changes(like allowance money to athletes) or you will see a huge chunk of the better teams leave. My question, is if this happens, what do the schools left out of the Big 4 do? If they can't pay athletes and the new association allows it, they are fricked.

The want to eliminate Amatuer rules in football. The better solution is to let those who want to make money go pro. That works in every other sports sans football.
Problem is with football, they aren't good enough at that age and not physically mature enough.
