Someone else put the rankings of the Pac 12 schools and the Big XII 4 that were potentially going there, and so I decided to take a look at how the Big 12 which apparently claimed higher academic Quality than the SEC ranked out. I also looked at the other BCS conferences to see how they graded out. I've included Pitt and Syracuse into the ACC since they are now there and A&M in the SEC, and here is how everything panned out:

SEC Average Rank = 99.1 (96 if you count A&M) *Note: The Mississippi schools and Arky bring this ranking down significantly as they are #132, #143, and #157)

Big XII-2 Average Rank = 100.2 (104.9 if you take out A&M and 99.8 before Colorado and Nebraska bolted)

PAC 12 Average Rank = 78.7 (86.4 if they take in UT, OU, OSU, and TTU)

ACC Average Rank = 49.2 (50.7 if you add in Syracuse and Pitt)

Big Ten Average Rank = 56.25 (52.2 before Nebraska joined)

Big East Average Rank = 112.3 (110.6 if you add in TCU and 125 if you take out Syracuse and Pitt)

The Big Ten and the ACC are honestly the only 2 top academic conferences.

The Pac 10 is better than the SEC, but the SEC is better than the Big XII or Big East.

So the academic arguments by OU and company are utter bullshite if that is their reasoning.

The whole academic angle is really about GRADUATE LEVEL rankings and research funding. The academic fit has more to do with bringing in an institution who can bring capabilities to be shared with others and visa versa.

Somehow on message boards across the web people have taken up the issue of undergraduate rankings and I don't think that was the original intent when acedemics were brought up at the outset of the expansion discussion.

While I agree to an extent, the graduate rankings don't significantly change things. In the Big XII none of those schools go drastically up.

Furthermore, in the PAC-10, none of those schools go up. The top research institutions are the ones also ranked highly in undergraduate education. You can always find a top program if you look at individual graduate/research points, but your conference affiliation for sports has very little to do with your research collaborations.

Not a misprint but a slight exaggeration. It's about 4.5 Bil I think. Twice as much as Vandy and 4 times more than UF which have the 2 biggest in the current SEC.

I understood academics only really come into play with schools like Boise State who are FAR below the rest of the BCS conference schools.

I agree, I thought I heard the BIG turned down Mizzou for that but Nebraska is lower than Mizzou. So it's not all about Academics.

B1G just cares about AAU status, not rankings. Nebraska was AAU but lost it this offseason after joining the B1G
