Death of the NCAA

I keep hearing if we end up with 4 super conferences of 16 or more teams, then the TV networks want them to form their own governing body. Since playoffs are part of the package, they don't want say an undefeated USC or tOSU left out because of sanctions.

The NCAA will let you know when they're through living!

I can see them revamping the BCS to a playoff, but no way the NCAA dies. Too many smaller sports (swimming, tennis, golf, gymnastics, wrestling) that someone would need to be responsible for.
Also, the NCAA is made up of a ton of schools. There are 120 (give or take) FBS football schools. How many more schools that are FCS, and then Division 2 and Division 3. Add all of those up and you get over 1,000 schools (according to Wikipedia 1281 schools).
Even if 64 schools did break away, you would not see the NCAA as an entity die. Look at it from outside of football...what would you do with those 64 teams in basketball? Have all 64 play in a championship tourney no matter how bad they are?

So what you are saying is that these schools will leave the NCAA so that they can cheat with impunity? Wild, wild west here we come...

i'm sure the new association would still cover these sports

i think it would survive for a while and fold eventually

reduce the tourney to 8 teams or so until you expand the division/association

This has more to do with the networks. They know they'll be paying billions and they want some control over the "product" Let's face it ESPN/ABC/Disney and CBS own college football
