The Perfect Post-Expansion Playoff System (Detailed)
Posted on 9/19/11 at 3:12 am

It couldn't be 4 team playoff like most suggest(if the BCS went to a playoff system), because what of the lesser teams of the NCAA? I say the post season playoffs work like this:
ACC Champion*
-vs-
Highest rated non-AQ team^
-Played in the Orange Bowl
Big 16 Champion*
-vs-
2nd highest rated non-AQ team^
-Played in the Fiesta Bowl
Pac 16 Champion*
-vs-
Highest rated AQ team**
-Played in the Rose Bowl
SEC Champion*
-vs-
2nd Highest rated AQ team**
-Played in the Sugar Bowl
Both Semi Final games played in Cowboys Stadium
BCSNCG played in one of the BCS bowl stadiums.
The BCSNCG will not be played at a bowl where a finalist has previously played in the postseason. The National Championship Game should be held at the bowl site nearest both teams that neither team has played at in the first round.
*Superconference champion results from a post season championship game against the two best teams in the conference(regardless of division)
**AQ teams specifies a team from one of the four superconferences that were not winners of the conference championships. Basically the first and second runners up. Can be taken from any conference, but not both from the same conference. If the AQ team receiving the bid played in the SEC or PAC 16 championship game and lost, they will not be matched up with the same team again in the first round. For example: these can be switched so that the SEC champion plays the highest rated AQ team and the PAC 16 champion plays the second highest rated AQ team if it would be a rematch of the conference championship.
^Non-AQ teams are the highest and second highest rated FBS teams that do not belong to the four superconferences.
***NOTE: the AQ and non-AQ bids would be rotated every year. This is just what it would start as. For example: next year, ACC champion plays the 2nd highest rated AQ team, BIG 16 plays highest rated non-AQ team, and so on down the line...

I know its a little daunting to read all these exceptions and rules, but I wanted to set up a realistic system with all the bases covered. Let me know what you think or give me suggestions if you have any!

the wild card seeds would have to rotate between all 4...
and a superconference championship might require a 4 team playoff in itself, so in essence you're creating an 18 team playoff with a double elimination for only two of the team
this would require the national champion to play 16 or 17 games

I agree that may need to happen.

I was thinking about this too. It's a valid argument, but I think that even with 4 divisions in each conference, the championship should be played against the two best teams in the conference, despite what division they're from.
If the regular season consists of 9 conference games (3 other teams in your division, and two teams from other 3 divisions) and 3 non-conference games to keep a 12 game schedule it would be:
12 games in reg. season
13 games after conference championship
14 games after first round of playoffs
15 games after semi finals
16th game is BCSNC
Yes, thats a tall order of any team, but it's definitely doable. I still think this is the best way to conduct a playoff system.
ETA: How does everything else look to you? Locations, exceptions, etc?

Id make it a 6 team...
4 superconference champs + 2 highest ranked teams from outside of those conferences.
number 1 and 2 ranked teams in the polls get a first round bye.
Week one
3vs6
4vs5
Week two
3vs6 winner vs 2
4vs5 winner vs 1
Then the title in week 3.

I don't think that makes much sense though. It could work, I guess.

There is just too much damn money in the current bowl system for a playoff to occur in the near future. It simply isn't going to happen.
And I can't say I'm too disappointed about that. The BCS has been kind to LSU & the SEC (excluding the Barn in 04)

ding. ding.
a 4 team playoff could be handled through the bowls, thats it.

Why only 4 teams? The eight team playoff model would satisfy the place of all bcs bowls. The money wouldn't go anywhere. I personally think there'd be more money involved because the teams are still in the running for a national title.

Seems like there'd be more money cause you'd have more games between good teams. I could not care less about 2/3rds of the bowl games.

Exactly. These games would make more money and get better ratings because all teams are still in the running for the national title. I don't get why people are saying a playoff system wouldn't make as much.

Yes. This would make the regular season as exciting as the NBA regular season. Congrats!

this will never work. how do they presell tickets if they don't know where the game is until a week before...

Why only 4 teams?
4 teams = only 2 bowl trips for fans.
8 teams = 3 bowl trips for fans
2 trips is a lot for most fanbases, 3 isnt going to happen at all.

you just made that up out of your arse. if it WOULD do what you said, they would already be doing it.
all they care about is making money.

It's hard enough to sell out a game like Alabama vs Utah or Oklahoma vs UConn when it's the last game of the year. I see more money being lost in schools not being able to sell tickets than what they make in the current system.
The only way IMO to handle a situation using the bowls that makes more money is 1st round at home, 2nd/3rd round at a bowl site.

Why cant we play playoff games in the home teams stadium? What is everyones deal with playing a playoff game a a nuetral site?
Why would you not want to see a Texas, USC, Nebraska come into Tiger Stadium(or i guess mountaineer field(?) for the OP) for a semi final playoff game.
Why should college football let some 3rd party take a lump of the profit?
and why wouldnt we want to give the higher ranked/seeded team the reward for a better regular season by playing at home?
