I wouldn't think it would hurt much would it?

Probably not, Basketball has a playoff system.

It might hurt them getting a high seed unless they are just a super team that year (St. Joe's and Memphis got high seeds the years they were great).
I don't think Kansas goes mid-major, though. Even with a sub-par football team their basketball team is one of the historic powerhouses so they will end up in a major conference. Even the SEC may be interested if it comes down to it.

KU won't be in a mid-major
My guess is that it's gonna end up (in order of likelihood):
remnant Big12 (if it isn't disbanded)
BigEast
MWC (which with added teams from former Big12 would not be mid-major, at least at first)
Although KU is AAU and thus could fit in B1G for that reason, I just don't see B1G ever inviting it, because there are too many better other prospects.
SEC? No way.

Big East has already said that if the Big12(10-1) folds, they would accept Kn, KSt, Mo, and/or IS/Baylor.

I doubt they would end up Mid Major B/C of their Basketball team. Plus KU is a big School with the KC market.

Will still be a Top Five Natty Power Program, but without proper conference affiliation(and/or an upgrade to Big East), could be susceptible to the same fate UNLV at times suffered..
