Why expand the SEC?

Florida State wouldn't/shouldn't join because it hurts the "in state, out of conference tradition.” I don't feel many SEC schools will want a large expansion unless it brings more $$ to their schools. The same will be said about Clemson and Georgia Tech moving over. The traditions/rivalries are still there, but why have them join the SEC unless it benefits the SEC’s pocketbook.
Virginia Tech and/or West Virginia would be better fits to join the East. Miami would also be a good fit because of their academic standards, even though their athletic programs are about to be in the crapper.
My opinion, 14 teams tops! We're already the best and most competitive conference in the country. Unless we want to go after schools to boost our basketball recognition or academics, I really don't feel like we should expand just because everyone else does.
Virginia Tech and/or West Virginia would be better fits to join the East. Miami would also be a good fit because of their academic standards, even though their athletic programs are about to be in the crapper.

The thing I don't like is the 14th could be Missouri, if that happens LSU in essence becomes the Big 12 with A&M, Ark, LSU, Missouri and we would lose some good ole sec rivalries.
I also don't like going to a 9 game sec schedule which looks to be on the horizon - this will eliminate a Cowboys Classic or Chick Fil A Classic game and make it that much more difficult to compete for a national title.

Missouri wouldn't necessarily have to go West. True, their closest opponent would be Arkansas, but if you look at a map, you'll see that the SEC's Eastern division is almost as much a Northern division, with the Tennessee schools and Kentucky (two states that border Missouri). If you put Missouir in the "East," make Arkansas their cross-divisional opponent (A&M would sub for Arkansas with South Carolina) it would work fairly well.

There is no reason to expand except that the movement appears to be towards superconferences and if that move is inevitable, then we had better get the best teams we can while the getting is good.
As someone on the radio said yesterday or the day before, this all has the look of being planned by the schools themselves. He said that right after the NCAA presidents meeting a few months ago this stuff really began to heat up almost as it the presidents sat around the bar at the conference and said, "You're coming with me and I'm going with him..." and so and so on.
I think there may be some truth to that. It seems everyone knows what moves are going to be made to a large degree, it is just that everyone is a little hesitant to get the ball rolling.

I always hear/read that UF won't allow FSU to join. Is that message board bullshite or is that legit?

Not legit. FSU had an invite in 92 but they turned it down and the spot went to USCe.

It's not that Slive needs to expand the conference. Conference expansion across the entire landscape is inevitable so it's a matter of the SEC cherry picking rather than getting the leftover chicks once the bar starts to close.

No reason to expand. Just because the big ten added Nebraska and the Pac 10 added Utah and Colorado I don't get why the SEC "had" to expand. Yes there's tv money, but FL and GA are growing states. FL's growth alone over the next 20 years means that the number of tv sets and eyeballs will be growing in the current SEC states. It would be better to lock up Florida with FSU and Miami instead of getting a piece of Texas.
If this is about keeping up with the Joneses then this could be a mistake.

The tv market in South Florida is pretty big and when it wins it expands to a national following in places like NY and NJ due to transplants and so on.
The SEC has survived schools getting penalized and let's say Miami does take a big hit and worse case scenario it becomes another Vandy on the field which won't be that bad at all.

Agree, though I would add NC State if they would come. WV may be the top pick since the ACC schools seem to be united in keeping their conference together.

If you want a school with good academic standards and poor athletics, Tulane would like to speak with you. So would Rice though its baseball team is usually very good. The best school in the southeast (and not already in the SEC) in terms of academic standards IMHO is Georgia Tech, but again the ACC appears to be united in keeping its conference together.

Cheery picking from schools like TAMU, WVA, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Oklahoma State or OU? There is only 2 even worth talking about in terms of marquee names.
FSU and OU.
No one should expand college football is fantastic the way it is at the moment. We've never had 4 BCS conferences with 12 teams and conference championship games.
You don't see the Big10 in a hurry to do jack.. Oh, that's right because with 11 teams and no championship game they racked in $22.3 Million per team.
Lets just wait to see what they will make with another marquee team (Nebraska) and a championship game. It looks like the SEC is driving expansion just to be 3rd again in revenue so it's a lose lose situation but go ahead and push it.

For the SEC to vote on TA&M they likely have a 14th in mind. I firmly believe that FSU is the one based on responses last week. Vir Tech and Clemson issued adamant denials of leaving their conferences. FSU's statement simply said that the SEC had not contacted them and they had no other comment. Further FSU is a football school and Jimbo Fisher spent 7 yrs in the SEC. He can see the handwriting on the wall when he sees top recruits going SEC yr after yr because that is where they want to play. If I am correct this will paly out after the season is over and not a minute sooner.
