Florida has come about as close to this as we'll ever see.
In 1996, their only defeat was a cheapshot-filled regular season loss to FSU...They landed a rematch in the Sugar Bowl for the national title and routed the 'Noles....

voters wanted it to happen with ohio state and michigan in 06, but florida looked too good to pass on after the why they crushed arkansas in the sec title game. If florida had lost, it would have been a michigan ohio state rematch. It really came down to florida's strength of schedule in the computers.

Let's say LSU-Bama is a nail-biter, defensive struggle and the game is decided on a last second block of an extra point meant to tie the game. In all other regards, the teams played evenly with no fluke scores. There is enough time left in the year at that point for the winner to go on and stay #1... win the CG and the loser to get back to #2 and stay there. Even if Boise is 12-0, with that schedule, there is absolutely no way I can fathom Boise beating out a 1 loss LSU or Bama under those circumstances. No way! The public will be clamoring for the rematch. You guys think the NC game last year was super expensive?
OMG! A Bama/LSU NC game? Nosebleed seats will be going for $5000 each!

Michigan Ohio State was the last game of the regular season. No one wanted to see the same game a month later....
LSU/Bama is mid season. Those teams grow over the last half of the season.

For everyone to say it is impossible, that just isn't true. Obviously it would be hard, but if there was ever a case for it would be 11-1 LSU against 12-1 SEC Champ Bama
1) LSU may have beaten both the Pac 12 and Big East Champ, with their sole loss on the road to the SEC Champ
2) The Michigan/Ohio State example is a terrible one and if anything is proof that LSU could play Bama. Those teams came very, very close to playing each other. plenty of voters had them 1 and 2. But Florida played a tougher schedule and the computers had a lot to do the jump. LSU will be helped greatly by the computers. Hell, 11-1 LSU would likely be higher than 12-1 Bama. Of course, it all depends what other teams are out there...but this is a REAL possibility.

Ok, let's say that happens. And LSU wins the rematch. At the end of the season, you'd have Alabama with a 13-1 record and SEC Champions. LSU would be 12-1 and not SEC champions. And they would be 1-1 against each other. And you think LSU should be National Champs? Ummm...no. If LSU wants to win the NC, they can beat Bama in the regular season. If not, tough shite.

No, they really won't. The ONLY people who'd want a rematch would be fans of the losing team of the 1st game.

Last I checked the New York Giants were the World champions in 2008?, not the 18-1 Patriots who beat them twice in the regular season.

Everyone outside the SEC would throw a fit about the guaranteed 6th in a row for the SEC. I think the only way it happens is if we're talking about both being undefeated except for the loser of LSU/Bama, and every other major team having more than one loss.
If an undefeated Boise jumped ahead of a one loss LSU or Bama, I would hate them even more than I do now. And that would be saying something.

Last I checked CFB >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NFL because body of work counts. C'mon, Matt, you're better than that.
And I'm not saying it can't happen, just that it shouldn't.

That's fine. But it can definitely happen unlike the claim of many on here. Regardless of what anyone says it came damn close in 2006 and absolutely would have if Florida lost the SECCG.
I am not for it, but if there are a bunch of 2 loss teams and then 1-loss LSU who played one of the toughest schedules ever by a NC contender. Would you really think we should have a 2 loss Oregon go over 1 loss LSU?

Oh, I know it can happen. I've said argued that against the guys who say "the pollsters won't let it." Well, they're only part of it, they'd have to go out of their way to move teams down lower than they deserve to avoid it. And that should get their votes taken away.

Well, we're on the same page here. I guess I just try to imagine if it were LSU who won the initial game and was sitting as 13-0 and SEC champs and were forced to have to beat Bama again. But in an abnormal year like '07, I'd certainly want the more deserving, 1-loss team playing. And make no mistake, if LSU lost the 1st game, my emotions would dominate my sense of justice, and I'd be clamoring from the rooftops as much as any LSU yahoo on earth.

yeah, like you said college football is based on "body of work". If LSU lost and its body of work was much better than other contender to play bama, then so be it. If it is a close call between LSU and someone else, the polls will and should give the nod to that other team.
That is why I like the checks and balances of the BCS computers and human polls. Computers carry enough weight to give deserving teams there due but not so much that they trump common sense. Va Tech had a slightly better computer score than LSU in 07, but the human polls put LSU ahead (without having to unethically push Va tech down).

They would move a team down. I am not arguing that, based on schedule strength, that an 11-1 LSU or Bama could/should be #2. But if there is an 12-1 or 11-1 Oklahoma/Oklahoma St./Florida St./West Va./Stanford/Etc, etc the voters would put that team in the NC. And with non-AQ sympathy the way it is, YES, a 12-0 Boise would get the nod over an 11-1 LSU or Bama.

I'd like to have seen the point differential last year had LSU beaten AR.

1. We would likely be above a West Virginia team that we beat on the road
2. People always completely ignore the computers and then they act there is this big conspiracy in the polls to keep teams "out". Sure most pollsters may put 11-1 Oklahoma State at #2 and 11-1 LSU at #3 because they think they are better but there is no history to suggest they will drop below 2-loss teams or anything. And if LSU is #3 in the polls and #1 in the computers, LSU probably gets in.

i would not use michigan/osu to compare bama/lsu national championship prospects.
i am so sick of hearing that. i think it's actually quite more possible than people think. first off it is much more appealing to all. and if that was the case these 2 would be the best teams in the country.
a 1 loss bama/lsu would be more deserving than any 1 loss big 12 or acc school.. plus if bama is that 1 loss school they always get more national respect and praise than they even deserve any ways. the masses over rate the hell out of them.
