Did double duty and saw LSU and A&M...

LSU fans in Arlington did it up big. The heat really hadme messed up (combined with alcohol) around 4pm. I found my second wind. The atmosphere inside was pretty solid I must say. Otherwise, after the trip to Cowboys Stadium last year, it wasn't anything unexpected.
A&M was MUCH better this time than my previous visits. It was nice to see an old SWC rivalry. The Aggie defense was interesting to watch. At times they were great, other times they couldn't cover the field. In all, strong performance by the Ags once they figure out how to not get PATs blocked.
Tailgating was good...I notice ALOT of them get a late start in some lots.It was a family atmosphere. There's alot less people doing dumb and obnoxious shite in Aggieland as opposed to LSU...not saying I don't like that in the Bayou, because I think that is our reputation to live up to.
Several Aggies I talked to had the respect for the SEC, excited about the possible move, and know what would lie ahead as far as having to reload a team while going into a physical conference. Many of them said their trips to LSU in the old days were somewhat daunting as far as the culture shock and the fans.
The in-game feel was great. The fans were loud, pumped up for the game, etc.
I don't get the UT thing though...check that, I do get it. I just think it's overdone. It's opening day, and I see SEVERAL "Maroon Out" shirts pimping their game on 11/24 against the 'Horns. Should I get my Arky shirt ready? The game is against SMU, right?
I understand the hate for Texas, it's big. A buddy of mine who got me the tix, and Aggie alum, said that after years of being 'under the thumb' of UT, you take any shots you can at them. I don't think he means that you wear "Saw em' off" shirts to every game.
Then again...that's just me. I don't see any sense in wearing a "Beat Florida" shirt to a game that doesn't involve Florida...
Funniest comment I heard while wearing my P & G: "LSU?!? We kicked that azz last year!"
All in all, very hospitable people. I had a great time at both games. My opinion of A&M's gameday atmosphere is higher than it was. It will be interesting to see how the expansion scenarios play out.

OK I take back the mean things I said about Corpus.
It irks me when I see A&M gear related to longhorns 'cause we obviously have plenty of great things we could promote about A&M rather than devote energy to t.u. It's my opinion that A&M assigns it's own worth and doesn't need to gauge itself by what the longhorns have going on. If we were to use them as our gauge this year I'd expect our football program to take a step or two back.
It was a great crowd for a season opener for SMU. I think a lot of that has to do with our preseason ranking and some SEC excitement around the program too. It was a packed house, not not very loud. That's no knock on the current students, 'cause they showed up well and were loud during yells, but the game didn't really command that much energy from the 12th Man. I expect our game against Oklahoma State to have the type of environment that'll make anyone proud.
Glad you enjoyed your stay sir. Come back for a conference game if you can.

Maroon out shirts every year highlight a home game in our schedule. This year is Texas, last year was OU I think

I get the Maroon Out tradition. I like it. We try the Gold Game, and it generally turns out to be successful in the student section, but not anywhere else.
We are probably too drunk and infatuated with 'lucky' shirts to ever pull off a Penn State whiteout game.
I guess because the Maroon Out game is against Texas, I take that as the typical Texas hate as opposed to students wearing the shirts for several home games.
I might be able to make it to a conference game. Like I sad...crowd was good, and into it when the game was close in the first half.
I will say this...two games in two days with lots of driving and lots of alcohol meant I had to go crazy with a bottle of Tylenol.
And to the hospitality of the Ags.

Glad you enjoyed it. Tailgating at A&M has changed a lot since the days of my youth. Gradually, they started scheduling more night games and laxing up on the rules surrounding tailgates. When I was a student, I usually just woke up hungover and tried to get to the stadium on time.

I did the hangover thing, but managed to make it to a tailgate around 9 or 10 am. Then drinking would make the hangover go away...and it would be about 3 times as bad on Sunday. I never got a damn thing done the day after a game.

I went to College Station too. Didn't go to the game though. Left at the start. Boring drive back to BR

That would have been a long drive postgame. I didn't make it back down here til about 2am.

If either of you had vaginas I would have given you a place to crash in Houston last night.

You should go to the OSU game. That should be an insane atmosphere. Texas game is during Thanksgiving, but I will say that it will probably be the loudest Kyle Field has ever been. Just based on the expectations that this team has. There will probably be BCS bowl implications down the line and a conference championship. Not only that, but all the SEC talk I think its going to be a phenomenal atmosphere. Way louder than last year's Nebraska game.

105E from College Station to Beaumont

I haven't made that drive in over 10 years, so 105 has probably improved, but that drive sucked balls pretty hard as I recall.

I agree...it sounds odd to hear Oklahoma State and Texas A&M in BCS talk...but it's the real deal. This game will knock someone down a peg, and give the winner a shot at Oklahoma for the conference title. The dark horse for me is still Texas. They COULD put it together, but their showing against Rice was bad.
Then again...I believe it was '06 where UT squeaked by Arky State and Central Florida, then went on a run...you never know with that kind of talent.
I still say winner of TAMU and Okie State will be the main challenger to Oklahoma.

never done that...and I travel the Texas roads alot. I thought Lake Chuck to Laffy on I-10 was pretty bad for an interstate...I-37 from Corpus Christi to San Antonio is boring, but the worst recently for me was Memphis to Little Rock on I-40 West.
I guess you at least bypassed Houston?

I agree. The bad part is that we face OU at Norman and Bob Stoops is 72-2 at home since being the HC. A lot of people were saying that Mizzou might be the dark horse, but after struggling to move the ball around against Miami(OH), I don't see it happening. When you look at the other teams in the conference you might be inclined to say Texas as the dark horse, but they didn't look very impressive against Rice. Scoring on gimmick plays (wildcat, wide receiver passes) shouldn't be necessary against a team like Rice. Their defense is still suspect. They will allow yards to a team like BYU that runs the ball well. Hell, that SMU team could have probably beaten Texas. Got to remember that they have new offensive and defensive coordinators. Their offensive line is not a strength and their running game will suffer because of it. That will put a lot of pressure, yet again, on Garett Gilbert. Will they be a surprise? Yea, they will probably make a bowl but when you look at their schedule, at least I can see 5-6 losses.
Others might say Baylor. They will probably roll into College Station being 4-1 or 5-0. They had a good start last year, then lost their last 4 or 5 games of the season. Their defense is abysmal. I remember that during the TCU/Baylor broadcast the announcers said that the TCU punter, who is 6'4 280, is bigger than any Baylor DL. Any team that has a running game will destroy their DL. A team like A&M will annihilate them.
Basically, I don't think there will be any dark horses in this conference. It will be solely between A&M, OU, and OSU for the league title.

I agree pretty much. Miami is a very underrated team. They won the their conference last year and are poised to do it again. While Mizzou didn't show great, they still have a great team. It was a hard first test for franklin, and he did well enough to win. I think they could still finish 3rd but probably 4th/5th.
Baylor and Okie state were interesting to watch. Their teams take the win by offense approach. Baylor's offense was oustanding against a slightly overrated defense. They have speed and legitimate talent on offense. RG3 and Wright are spectacular. They obviously got worn down as the game went on on both sides of the ball. Also, if you're able to get some licks on RG3 he loses some of his mojo. On defense they're average and lack depth, but Bennett is a hell of a coach.(he was on our DC radar) he'll keep the squad respectable.
Okie State needs to get their defense together, they'll lose a few games because of them. Their offense is great as usual though...they can shootout with anybody.
After this weekend I feel OU&A&M are clear 1&2...while okiestate is 3a,Baylor3b, and Mizzou3b as well.
Texas just doesn't have the talent to get past 5th IMO.
