"There is much speculation right now regarding conference affiliation that seems to change by the hour. Commenting on such conjecture is not productive and creates a distraction for our program. BYU is focused on the opportunities ahead. We are excited about our relationship with ESPN as a football independent and our affiliation with the West Coast Conference. The university will have no further comment."

So they're officially off the list.

I think BYU takes our spot, probably just being quiet until the spot is open. But if they did turn it down....bwahahahaha

I don't think so. They really feel they can pull off a Notre Dame with Mormons living across the country.

I think the only way BYU would join is as a football only member.

BYU has enamored itself with becoming the "Notre Dame of the West". No BCS conference wants them, so instead they are going to pretend that there are BCS conferences out there clamoring for them to join. There isnt. Their rival joined the Pac12 and they went independent so as not to be entirely upstaged. Now they are just going to sit back and play coy. Because after all, they can't pretend to be the "Notre Dame of the West" if they are in a conference. They do have something in common with Notre Dame and Texas though: hubris in excess.

Austin Paper Reports Big XII "Gonna Die" ... SOON
quote:
Go ahead, Sooners. Make the last move that sinks the Big 12.
And it is quite possible, in light of Texas A&M's defection, that your move will be one that politically astute Texas quietly supports while also hoping that it happens quickly. The Longhorns would dearly love the Sooners to take the lead. And much of the heat that comes with it.
Should Oklahoma act upon its earnest desires and seek an invitation to join the Pacific-12 Conference — something I'm fully expecting to happen within days, if not hours — that decision could well be the killing blow to the Big 12 while also providing Texas the political cover to follow suit and ask for admission as well.
