would like to get one of these calibers for the kids to shoot but need something that will be sufficient for deer. Probably not a youth model so dad and big bro can also shoot so something with little recoil. Pro's Con's The little guy is 9 and he shoots a 10.22 Ruger pretty well

7MM-08
is PERFECT!

My best friend and Hunting buddy has one, and he still uses it.
It has like zero recoil, and has plenty of knockdown. Super accurate also.

He has killed probably 35-40 deer with that gun.

I would go either 7mm-08 or .243
I was given a youth model 7 in .243 that I still own. Even though it is a youth model I find I can still shoot it fairly comfortably. I am not sure how the recoil compares between the two but I would think the 7mm-08 has a little more.

Toss the .22s. The .243 and 7mm 08 are based on the same casing. Cannot go wrong with either. My .243 has been very lethal.

.223 and .22-250 are probably a little too small for deer.

7mm-08 and .243 are both good deer rounds and have relatively little recoil. I prefer the 7mm-08, but the .243 is probably the more popular round with easier to find ammo. 7mm-08 probably packs more of a punch too.

I swear I was deadlier as a kid with a .243 than I am now with my .30-06.

I just think I was supremely confident with that rifle

Confidence goes a long way towards accuracy. Took me a while as a kid to not flinch. Mainly it was the muzzle blast and not the recoil that bothered me as a kid

That's why I'll never own a magnum or anything much larger than the .308 based cartridges.

thats what I was thinking but I elk hunted with a kid in New Mexico that only used a 22-250 but he took head and neck shots only

thats why I was kinda leaning away from a youth model with a shorter barrel

Look im 30 and I have wacked the shite out of some deer with a 7-08. If you look at it on a ballistics chart it is comparable to a 270 in knockdown power with a lot less recoil. Look at it like this. Compare it to a 30-06 and a 308. A 280 Express is a 7MM bullet in a 30-06 casing. A 7-08 is a 7MM bullet in a 308 casing. So you are getting the benefit of the 7MM bullet just in a smaller package with less recoil.

I've got a .243 WSSM that my son shoots very well. I play around with it too. It can shoot a Hell of a lot straighter and longer than I can. Fun little gun, but ammo is a bitch.

.243 is an awesome deer caliber for the size animals we have down here and recoil is minimal.

7mm-08 is even better with a little more recoil if I recall correctly. But either one would work great.

6mm Remington

I've explained it before.

For trespasser's 3 wheelers, I highly suggest 7mag over 30'06.

7mm-08 is a great caliber For deer. I also wouldn't overlook a 25-06. My dad shoots one and that thing is sweet. It's a very accurate and capable round with very little recoil and the muzzle blast is similar to the .243.
