Should baiting/feeding deer be illegal?

I say yes. I think it would get deer to move around more during the day as they don't have piles of corn to visit every night.
But I will continue to feed as long as it is legal.

i dont think so. its good to keep them in the area. Otherwise you would probably see deer moving in to more urban area's

I hunt WMA where it's illegal to bait & the deer still feed at night. Also on a club where we bait & the deer still feed at night. It's being at the right place at the right time. Baiting just helps keep them in that area.

They are nocturnal in nature.

It is illegal is Alabama. Basically, any bait, decoys or lures outside of the white salt blocks are illegal. Yet every co-op, feed store and Wal-mart sells it because a large number bait illegally.

No, it shouldn't. Especially with todays hunting lease system. Little yellow acorns are great supplements when your land has no little brown ones.

Is it legal to bait in LA?
Posted on 8/19/11 at 6:54 am to Bama and Beer
We can only feed during the off season here in AL. Suppose to have all corn removed 2 weeks prior to season.
Funny how you dont see pallets of corn being brought out until right before season though.....

Hunting over bait vs a food plot are much different if you can spend weeks months setting up feeders what not help with habitat that support the game. Feeders and and bags of feed and hunting over it is not hunting. Sitting in a tree stand were you have kept a few hundred pounds of corn for the last year and shooting that big buck is a not much more than a canned hunt but you can call yourself a hunter. Its always a great Idea to have a gathering place for all the deer to hang out and eat together off your feeders where CWD Brucellosis can be spread from deer to deer. Go ahead flame on But in states where this has happened hunting has sucked for years. If its Legal and Your State Fish and Game are not concerned than I guess I shouldn't worry because the stat DNR biologist know what is best for all of us.

I don't think feeding them during the off season should be illegal. But hunting over feed is illegal where I hunt. And it's still done, a lot. I'm not find of it, it makes some people lazy when it comes to scouting. And the fact that everyone else on the lease feeds makes it harder to see deer if you don't.
At least where I hunt, hunting over feed you'll see more young deer and does, but the big bucks are smarter than that.

I think you may be watching to much TV....in most all low fence hunting a Mature Buck will not come to a feeder and eat. He may come at night but not during the day. And Chances are if you kill a buck with nice horns eating corn when you age him you will find out rather quickly he was a young deer. I don't really care what people do or how they hunt as long as they do it legally. I have a feeder set up and I have a stand close to the feeder that me and the kids hunt out of. Gives them a chance to actually see deer and enjoy the hunt. Then I have stands set up away from food sources that I hunt.

I second this.
I hunt one tract that is 100% pine.
Deer do not eat pinestraw. If it wasnt for corn, I wouldnt have a chance in hell to put my nephews and little cousins on a stand and see enough deer to keep there interests.

My family land in Bienville is a mix of pine hills and oak flats and cypress swamps. I dont really "bait" I might spread out a little corn in the travel corridor, but thats just to make them stop for a shot. This new lease I'm trying to get on, and scouting tomorrow, is primarily pines with a small stretch of an oak flat. I'll probably put alot of corn, rice bran, etc out here. This is owned by the timber company and quality deer management wasn't their concern. Using artifical food sources can be a good thing if the environment has been altered or just isn't good enough for the deer to thrive in.

How is feeding corn any different than planting food plots?
I have killed a few nice bucks and none have been eating or going to eat corn when I shot them. The reason I put out corn is to keep the does in my area.
Do you guys realise that most all the hunting shows in the midwest are hunting over corn or soybean fields? That a helluva lot of "natural" bait!
As far as the scouting comments go, put out corn in a random place and hunt it all year and see how many big bucks you kill. I pride myself in scouting an area and determining the right spot to put my stand.
I have to wonder sometimes just how much some of you even hunt.

I think that feeding should be, and is, completely legal, food plots, feeders, all that jazz. I dont think you should be able to hunt over it, and where i hunt it is not legal to do so, although most, and even I have been guilty of it. Without feeding the deer though, a lot of places dont have the natural nutrients for the deer to grow big and healthy, and with big racks. Basically, keep the laws how they are and try and enforce the baiting law better.

I killed a twelve point last year.
He looked up with a corn cob in his mouth.
