When Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin asked Aggies for patience Monday, maybe he should have included the Big 12 in his request. The ongoing courtship between A&M and the Southeastern Conference cannot continue for much longer without resolution, Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe made clear Tuesday. “I think the members deserve to know what Texas A&M’s intentions are going forward regarding the conference,” Beebe said. He said the idea of the saga extending for months simply isn’t a possibility for the Big 12. “I would suggest that would be an untenable position,” Beebe said. “We can’t operate with an institution waiting to decide if it wants to remain in the conference. There has to be a very short time for an institution to commit.” At some point soon, Beebe said he could approach the Big 12’s board of directors about setting a date for A&M to make a commitment. He raised the idea that the Big 12 could pursue a stronger contractual pledge “because the one last summer wasn’t binding enough.” In addition to the current rules specifying withdrawal penalties, Beebe suggested that the extended commitment would involve damages for any school that would leave.

Beebe certainly doesn't seem to be the smartest guy in the room. I know the guy is backed into a corner but he put himself there.

So what happens if Beebe sets a deadline and A&M says, "we'll make our decision when we decide to make it?" Is the Big 12 going to kick A&M out of the conference?

Great! Then A&M won't owe any exit fees (since the Big 12 terminated the partnership, not A&M) and within 72 hours (if not a whole lot sooner) A&M becomes the SEC's 13th member.

Exactly. The aTm president just said that the board gave him an unlimited time frame to make a decision. But now the Big 12 is trying to enforce its authority to make Loftin make a choice? Unlikely.

The existing situation with the Big 12 contract is probably the only thing that is keeping aTm from moving to the SEC immediately. And now, Beebe is trying to re-negotiate for stricter buy-out penalties? He isn't very smart, b/c all he'll do is ensure aTm leaves for the SEC.

What are his other options? Houston? TCU? Sad.
Noone will be able to compete with Tx when they get an extra $15M more per year than everyone else.... in addition to the uneven Big-12 Tv contract payouts. It's only a matter of time before this house of cards crumbles.

I'm sure his big stick in imposing a deadline will be that the Big 12 will refuse to negotiate a reduced exit fee for A&M like they did Neb. and Colo.

You would think but it surely does seem the other Big XII-3 programs are completely fine with being Texas' cum rags..

Beebe is just a puppet for Texas. He will do whatever their lawyers tell him to do. IE a deadline would be stupid...they aren't stupid.

Yeah. It only moves up the time table for aTm to make a decision and get them out of the media spotlight. Noone is talking about the upcoming season. Everyone is talking about conference expansion, and more specifically aTm and the SEC. It's not good business for everyone else.

Beebe, UT, and the rest of the country know that aTm is gonna bolt.... So, I guess they figure, why prolong the inevitable?

This is about the rest of the Big 12, not A&M. If you didn't want to prolong things, give them a weeklong get out of jail free card. No, this is about making the remainder of the Big 12 harder to breakup. Schools that might be afraid of ending up in the WAC or MWC, like TT, Baylor, KSU, and ISU would probably go along. Teams who know/think they have options would probably delay: OK, OSU, MO, KS. Any new team like Hou or SMU would sign in a sec.

All the Big 12 has to do, though, is have a quick vote up those exit fees to something really painful.
