It still makes no sense for the Big "12" to disband

Disbanding means a lot of schools lose access to a BCS auto-bid, and there are plenty of viable replacements out there whose on-field performances guarantee that the conference will not lose its auto-bid (can't find the link, but the requirements for keeping an auto-bid are REALLY easy to meet; no conference has ever come close to losing its bid).

It could work. As long as no else leaves, adding TCU, Houston, and BYU to get to 12. Have all the Texas teams and BYU in the South, move OK and OK St. to the North with the rest of their Big 8 rivals. Go to the current SEC scheduling format for the sole purpose of keeping the OK-UT game an annual affair.

I think the issue in the future would be if they would even be considered an elite conference - if Big 10, Pac 12 and SEC all expand to 16 teams. Big 12 be UT, OU and who else?

I hope the big 12 stays together. I think they should expand and add Houston and see if BYU or TCU wants to join. I think they could also see about SMU.

Also, the number of BCS bowls will not decrease, making it highly unlikely for any of the six AQ conferences to lose their auto-bids.

I agree, its highly unlikely they will disband. It is all up to Texas, and Texas likes having an easy schedule, plus conference TV money on top of the LHN money. The names I'm hearing from people no more connected than me are BYU and UH.

But if Texas and OKlahoma/OSU leave and the conference is filled with BYU, Houston, Air Force and similar schools, should it be an AQ conference still?

Through last year, the Big 12 was generally the 2nd best conference. Without Nebraska, Colorado, and A&M, each of whom has sucked for at least half the past decade, the conference doesn't drop any more than two spots. The Big 9 is #4 at the worst.
If Texas and the Oklahomas leave (OSU isn't going anywhere, though), the right additions will keep it just fine. This conference isn't in danger if it doesn't panic. Trust me.

Agree. Even if A&M does leave, it still makes sense for UT and Oklahoma to hold things together considering their easier path to the BCS and lopsided revenue sharing. I'm sure TCU would be glad to drop their move to the Big East to join the Big 12 which would retain 10 teams and no need for a conference championship. Texas and Oklahoma basically have one big game each season against each other and they are in the Fiesta Bowl with a chance at a BCS Championship spot. They basically can have their cake and eat it too if they simply keep the ingredients together.

Not if 3 - 4 other conferences go to 16 top notch teams - this will be the end of the BCS thus end of the Big 12. The Big 12 isn't much right now - much less if Pac 12 Big 10 and SEC all go to 16 teams.

What is really scaring Texas right now is the possibility of A&M going to the SEC being the spark for superconferences. Anyone not in a conference then will be SOL, and no superconference is going to allow the longhorns to keep their network. They would be forced to beg, hat in hand, for someone to take them with the albatross of the LHN around their neck.

I agree with him, the ACC would be a lot better than the 'new Big 12'. If you compared them, VA Tech, Fla State, & Miami would be head and shoulders above any team in the Big12. Then you could make a for BC, Ga Tech, Maryland, & Clemson.

They won't disband. There are plenty of other schools that would jump at the opportunity to join the big 12. They will just add UH to replace A&M and stay at 10 teams for now.
BTW how much does this suck for TCU right now? They would be a fine replacement for A&M but they are in with the big east for now. Anyone know if they could break away from the big east to join the Big 12?

i agree
get UH for sure
getting one of the schools closer to cali (Nevada, UNLV) would probably help (new markets, hurt the pac12 market share, etc)
