Blog That Breaks Down Oregon's Offense

Good stuff if you like to understand what the other guys are doing. I hit a lot of Georgia Tech websites before the Chicken Bowl a few years ago and it was nice when the game arrived, to actually recognize the plays as they happened, what the reads were, what counters might come out of a formation.
Here's an amateur that's spent some time to break down Oregon's plays. Second half of the video picks up the pace with a number of plays with the same concept.
I would think, with our secondary, that when they spread the field, the pass threat will be less than what they might do up the gut against the interior of our line.
Triple Tailback Formation

Norfolk, I saw this video a few days on the Oregon Scout board. Good video about an interesting formation, however this guy almost creams his pants everytime he mentions an Oregon player.

He does have that tendency.

Yikes! I'm scared. Can we just forfeit the game to the Ducks & get ready for Northwestern St on the 10th?

If it's so great, why couldn't they beat AU with it? Because it works against less creative and less athletic defenses. It reminds me of these gimmick high school offenses and that crazy crap UF tried to pull with all their lineman lined up 5 yards from the sideline, but the qb was still in the middle of the field.

It's an unusual play. Do you not like football?

NCG was a matter of breaks which could have gone either way and been game changes. Oregon's speed against AU was heavily neutralized due to the shitey conditions of the grass. Squares of turf literraly flew up during the game.

Miss the game? Auburn kicks a field goal as time expires to win. One of the closest BCSCG of all time.

The plays basically come down to speed of the linebackers and power in cornerback. The plays will work sometimes and there is little you can do for that. The key is having them work less often than Oregon needs for them to work.

You are also failing to consider that on that particular night there were a number of times where Darron Thomas made poor reads in the option game - specifically during plays using the new formation(s.)

I love Oregon's offense, its no gimmick, just like there is no such thing as a trick play in football, its all about deception, mis direction, etc.

Poor reads? That’s being nice. Thomas (and I’m a huge Thomas fan all the way back to his recruitment) was abysmal in that game. The worst I’ve ever seen him. If he plays even an above average game yal win. If he plays like he did against USC, yal win by 10+. Kelly’s wrinkles with the fullhouse and two-back sets were genius and had gaping holes that Thomas just shat the bed on.
I could go on for hours and breakdown all of Thomas’ misreads but it would take forever.

Seems like partway through the season, Thomas quit looking to run the ball and became very conservative about it.
The Oregon boards thought that the backup situation might have something to do with it, that they were trying to keep Thomas healthy.
But he sure didn't seem very aggressive about looking to keep the ball the last few games of the season.

Yea the fanbase collectively was definitely speculating a lot about that. It did sort of seem like Thomas was being instructed to avoid running on his own and use his playmakers instead. And given that his true back-up was redshirting (Bryan Bennett) it sort of figures that they would try to protect him.
Things might be different this season - with him having added some valuable pounds, and Bennett having come off of his redshirt.

Fair enough... I think he was rattled by the penetration Fairley was getting early on. (But I would also argue that he displayed the nerves of a first-time starter in the biggest game of his life on the first possession when he made the terrible move of pitching to LMJ late.)

I didn't miss the game. The guy in the video just makes it sound unstoppable which it obviously is not. All of the plays shown could be stopped by a well disciplined defense that is just average athletically.

Those must have been pretty uncommon on Oregon's schedule the last 2 years.
