we are in Perdido Key on my first day of vacation with my fam. My 17 year old son and I were wade fishing and saw a guy fishing out of the kayak linked below. We were both very impressed and want one pretty bad now! Basspro in Destin (2 hours away) has 5 in stock and the one in Spanish Fort has none in stock. I am really considering driving to Destin and buying one. We have been wanting one anyway for ponds and backwater fishing. Also, any recommendation for accessories?

(BTW I hung a Ray this morning that put on quite a show for about 10 seconds)

Ascend Kayak
Thanks,
Sull

That's the one I have. Great starter kayak. Do a search for kayak on this board and u will have alot to read. I hauled in a 30"+ redfish in my yak yesterday....nothing like it!

Also, search for my thread I started about fishing in Navarre. Great spot for specks and reds. Have fun!

I do not know how far you are from Tallahassee, but there is a 12' Ascend listed on Craigslist, 5 days ago, for $350. You may be able to negotiate him down a little since you have to travel so far.

Find out the general condition of the boat and especially the condition of the skeg, and the rest of the bottom of the boat. The skeg should be nice and squared off on both sides. The skeg is damaged by dragging the boat over rough surfaces. Also find out the age of the boat. The paddle that comes with it is an entry level paddle that sells for $45.

Do you think you would need or use the fish finder? I don't like the idea of carrying a
heavy 12 volt battery in my boat, but that's just me.

I would tell him that you are looking at one
for $350 and see what kind of response you get. I would think a fair price would be $400-500.

Hopefully some members of Team Ascend can comment on what they think on the $$ this guy is asking.

before you buy anything go to pensacola kayak and talk to someone there, they will also let you demo boats so you get a feel for what you are buying. do this first its very important. you don't want to spend 500 bucks on something thats not a good fit for you. when you get back to la. look up bckfc good people.

Got an Ascend FS10 as well.

I had it on top of my SUV yesterday and I pulled into a gas station and a guy next to me goes, "hey, nice boat you have there." I said "thanks, its a kayak"

Well we are about to drive to Bass Pro Destin to buy the Ascend kayak linked in my initial post. Any recommendations on paddles, anchors, mounting to the top of our Tahoe, etc.?

Also, is Ascend a Bass Pro brand?

Thanks so much for each of your input,

Sull

Yes it is.

I have a 3# grapple anchor and it works well even in a fairly strong tide / wind. Go to Academy and get that. Get about 20' of good rope. Go to youtube and look up anchor trolley systems. You can make one for under 5 bucks and not drill into your kayak. Also make a stake out pole or cajun anchor. You can make that out of 1" pvc or a wooden broom handle. These are quicker and quieter to use in the shallow flats and you can use your anchor trolley for this also.

Let us know how it goes! BTW, I have family in mansfield (Benson) and Shreveport. Find us some good places to yak fish up there.
