just to get that out of the way and we can direct all discussion on the topic here

the new rookie wage scale has NOTHING to do with Harper's deal

how much money do you honestly think we saved on rookies this year?

how expensive do you think late 1st round picks were?

Probably true and I just saw on WAFB Williams basically said shut the frick up to all the haters thinking Harper got overpaid...

Said you shouldn't judge Harper on two bad plays in the Seattle game and he was critical to get back in the defense.

About $2m, at most. All the savings were in the top 10 picks.

harper did get overpaid. not by like double or anything, but he is overpaid

SS is not a valuable position and we're paying him really legit money

i can completely ignore the seattle game and say that with confidence

And the little savings we had with our two picks in the first round were eaten into by the increase in minimum wages for those in the 2nd-7th rounds.

I'd be interested in seeing Will Smith's contract. Will be critical for him to perform this year. Seems like Smith has a good season every other year...so I guess he is due this year.

Will Smith needs another DE on the other side who is a threat. Once Cam Jordan steps up Will Smith will be dominant again.

In 2009 and 2010, the last players taken in the 1st round got about $13M over 5 years with various amounts guaranteed. I don't know what Ingram and Jordan are getting but it's looking like somewhere around $7M-$8M guaranteed over 4 years. That's $2.5M per year last year and $1.75M per for this year's picks. Of course, the guaranteed money part throws off the comparison a bit because the guaranteed part seems to have increased some this year over 2009-2010.

LINK Here's a good story about the new rookie scale. It helps explain why these deals are getting done so quickly. This wasn't how it was designed to go down, but someone leaked the info to agents. With the formula, you can figure out exactly how much a guy should get at each slot and so far, the deals have pretty much been falling in line exactly with those. Originally, the idea was that there would be more room for negotiations. Even though the team's overall allotment wouldn't change, individual players/agents could haggle for more of the pie. Now that they all know the formula, it is difficult to do that b/c you'll inevitably short some of your other picks if you go higher on a particular guy.

And with the restrictions on the rookie pool, it would be fairly easy to figure out Jordan's deal since he is the last of the unsigned draft picks. In other words, he really has no room to negotiate here (except perhaps in signing bonus/incentives). He'll be signed and delivered in the next day IMO.

I agree, but Williams wasn't around when Harper was riding the stationary bike.
