Stemming from my post a few days ago, where can I find these in baton Rouge?

I haven't been there in a year but Montalbano's on Florida has royal reds. They use them for their boiled shrimp.

Whole Foods usually has them. I don't know how fresh. I got them from there about a year ago and they were great.

You're looking for fresh royal reds in BR? That's never going to happen.

I don't think you can get royal reds unless they are frozen, or were previously frozen. At least I've never seen them anyway.

When I said fresh, I meant not cooked (Royal Reds are frozen on the boat as caught). I just called Heads & Tails, he can get me 25lbs of 10-15 for around $13 a pound.
He will have to call around and find the 4 count prawns I am looking for.
Anyone wanna split a box?

It's a seafood restaurant/market. They have a fresh seafood section when you walk in with shrimp, catfish, etc. Call them up.

Have you had Royal Reds? They really don't justify paying that premium. Go to Farmers market Saturday and get you 10lbs of fresh gulf shrimp @ $5/lb.

Thats what I was thinking. For the price I'd rather have Large Gulf Shrimp.
ETA: I'd still take a pound off that 25lb batch.

I love royal reds, but agree. I wouldn't pay more than a buck or two a pound over the price of regular gulf shrimp. Which is about what you pay around Gulf Shores/Mobile.

Yes, thats how they sell shrimp, by the size. 10-15, 16-20, 21-25, etc, # of shrimp per pound
10-15 is about as big as you will get for Louisiana gulf shrimp

RR's were $9 a pound for 10-15ct in GS. They were actually boxed in 10-20 ct box, and I had her pull the big ones for me. I only bought 1.5 pounds of the RR's and 4 prawns (not 4 pounds). They were $21 a pound.
I know, I will probably pass on the RR's, but if he can find me some prawns, I will pay up to $15 a pound for them.
The prawns were better than the RR's.

Aren't royal reds typically caught in the spring? Maybe thats why the price is so high, or b/c its a special order?

Probably cause he's trying to get them in BR as opposed to South Alabama. Which is where the mostly come from..

Im clearly in the minority here, but I got some a while back and found them not to be any big deal.

I wonder why they are not caught here. Louisiana coast is not that far from the Bama coast (as the crow flies). I know the are deep water shrimp, caught about 1800 feet down.

Maybe cause like Tigerspy, Louisiana folks don't see the big deal

I like getting them when I'm in Gulf Shores, and think there is a unique difference between RR's and regular shrimp. But I wouldn't say they are a whole lot better..

I only see Royal Reds where steamed seafood is sold, like the Jourdan River Steamer over here. Steamed seafood isn't really a Louisiana thing per say.
