Cobia Fishing

This is one of many fish that I have yet to catch, but really want to. I've heard eels, live hardheads, and when there in a frenzy they'll pretty much eat anything. What are you thoughts on places, time of year, baits, and techniques?

I have caught one and it was awesome. The guide would spot them and then cast out in front of it. He used plastic baits.

I used to catch them on hot dogs, just depends on their mood.

Also if you hook one don't be in too much of a hurry to boat it. many times its friends will come see what is up and you can hook multiple at a time

I've never seen one not hit a live croaker.
Make a few passes around the rig before you start throwing out to see if that brings any up. They are very curious fish and as stated before, they like to travel in pairs. There's not much like a double hookup on lemons.

When casting to them literally try and hit them in the head with the bait and reel it in as fast as you can.
Also many hook ups are right at the boat DO NOT gaff the fish until it's realized it's hooked and made some runs, Gaffing a green ling and putting it in the boat WILL result in MANY broken rods, tackle, etc...

I've also heard people say best tasting fish in the gulf which is a bold statement, but I have yet to try.

Caught 2 on our last trip. Both times we were dragging pogies(dead) slowly behind the boat. They dont put up much of a fight until they get to the boat, then it's on like someone slapped a racehorse on the arse.

On my recent trip to the beach, I caught one while surf fishing with live bait. Not big, but a lot of fun. My son also caught a baby cobia while fishing with dead shrimp on a small pier.

How deep are they hat? And do they follow the blue/green water in to the shallow rigs sometimes?
We've caught a few in shallow water and we think it was just a fluke

Dont go for them at a beach, you will be highly disappointed

It would be hard to say it's better than fresh off the boat tuna for me, but it's right up there.

In the fall I've caught them 30' of water. Just fish for mangroves and if they are on a rig they will come investigate you while there.

Have caught them as close in as the 1st bouy out of Cameron. Pull up, hit on bouy with a hammer for a minute, if nothing comes up, go to the next. Have caught them on plastic - to - tinfoil on a hook. Favorite is weenies or vienna sausage!

Oh, I am not suggesting that you surf fish for them. I was just blown away that I actually caught one on the beach
