Graduating college and asking current employer..

I have been with my current company for over 6 years. They have treated me well from high school through college and now I am soon to graduate. I graduate in roughly two weeks and would like to keep my eyes open to possibly staying with them. The problem is that my current position is dreadful. They have different types of positions available ranging from office staff to maintenance, etc. All of which would be a step up from what I do. How would you go about asking your boss if they have any positions open outside of what you currently do? Anything in particular to keep in mind? I will be sending an e-mail if that changes anything.

Why would you send this in an email? Just go up to your boss and basically say hey you know I just graduated college I would love to stay with this company and take on some more responsibility is there anything I can do to make this happen.

Well, my immediate boss has no control of this. I would be sending the e-mail to the president of the company. He is the only one who really has any say so in the matter. I do not see him on the normal basis.

If you are hell bent on going directly to your President, email him and ask him for 15-30 minutes for a meeting.
I'd still go through your supervisor if he has a good relationship with the President.

+1
I don't think it would be critical to get your current boss's approval; especially if he is sandbagging. Plus if he was really looking out for you, he would have already discussed this with the President. Maybe just mention to your boss that you are going to talk to the President.

solid advice.

Chances are if you were a good employee then they would have been aware that you were graduating and looking for a full time job. My company has had a few college interns stay on at a full salary position. We've also had some come through that were not offered full time jobs.
Not sure where you fit into this spectrum but the advice others in the thread gave is solid. If you have been there 6 years as a high school and college student, you should be able to talk to a decision maker about full time employment.

Oh I am, don't worry. This would be the very last resort. If they offered a substantial salary with their own contribution into retirement, I would see where it could go, possibly. Very last resort, don't worry.

It seems odd to me that after 6 years this discussion hasn't come up with your supervisor/owner/President or someone.
Can you give more details into what kind of work you do... big company/small company?
