Article in today's Times-Picayune about Tulane AD Rick Dickson's quest for a stadium to be built on campus. What say the MSB?

They need one, but where is the $$ going to come from?

25,000?
That would be about the smallest DI FBS stadium in the state wouldn't it?
I know they are in New Orleans and land is scarce but they need to have a better option than 25,000 if they ever want to amount to something. If they can't do 35,000 or better on campus then find a place off campus like the parks or existing stadiums - buy them - re-build them and still allow HS football games there.
If they can't do that they need to just squash this thing and put all the money and effort into other projects. They could knock out those tennis courts and make one heck of a football practice complex or something. If football is not their baby then they might as well drop down or be straight up about their intentions - being happy with what they currently are.

That's what the AD is asking- he seems to be a little more grounded than
quote:
I wonder if they are really serious. They should set a goal and say if we get to 50 percent of the anticipated cost, we’re going to take a leap of faith in college athletics and start construction and once they drive the first piling, watch the money roll in.”

They really need at least 40K for it to be worthwhile.
25K just screams small-time. And if they schedule a good opponent, they'll have to move that game to the Dome which defeats the purpose of being on campus.
I would LOVE for there to be a new Tulane Stadium, with a real gameday atmosphere. But it's going to be hard to pull off.

Doesn't matter, no one would go anyways
Well I might, but no one else

Well, they gave a range from 25K-30K. They mentioned that the SMU stadium holds 32K, and so far, it looks like that's been enough to give them some success (in addition to having a pretty damn good coach in Jones).
The point here is that getting the on-campus stadium gets the ball rolling. It builds tradition (tailgating on campus, player walks), and it should help with recruiting (the administration establishing their commitment to the program). You could have a real snowball effect here, and who says that you can't expand on the capacity if the numbers go right? I don't recall them saying the capacity was restricted first and foremost by geography. I assumed it was all $$.

Besides LSU how often does Tulane have an opponent with a big traveling fanbase come to them?

Didnt Bama and one of the Mississippi schools come here recently?

I don't see why Tulane would be expected to build a much more impressive on-campus stadium than other C-USA teams. As you said, SMU only has 32,000 and Southern Miss just recently upped their capacity to 36,000. I don't see why Tulane needs a stadium with more than other schools in their own conference. It seems to me that somewhere around 30,000 would be fine.

I've gone to Tulane games in the Dome where the announced attendance was 25,000 and I'll bet there weren't 5,000 actual people there.
And their plan includes getting $20 million for the naming rights! I don't know about that.

Before Katrina, maybe 7 or 8 years ago. They came VERY close to dropping football.

Tulane went to Bama and Miss. St has come to Tulane twice but I wouldn't consider them a big traveling fanbase.

Ole Miss came to Tulane last year and brought 25,000 or so.
Tulane is going to need some kind of excitement whether it's a new coach or stadium to combat what Mark Hudspeth is bringing in SW Louisiana. Blee dat.

He specifically said 2 years ago. And I don't think you're correct either, although I have less knowledge of that time frame
