LSU Depth Chart - Hatcher Starting MLB

LSU Depth Chart as of 7/14/11
I did not foresee Hatcher taking over the MLB spot from Sheppard. If anything, I thought the general consensus was that Hatcher would split time with Francois. Is this a sign of strength for Hatcher or a sign of weakness at LB?
Can Hatcher realistically replace Shep's 110 tackles?

Those are some huge shoes to fill...I can't say I'd feel comfortable with Hatcher there.

Looks like Wright took over #2 from Shep.
N'ah look at the Z position.

Yeah I just noticed I read it wrong.

There's a key word "or" in there that you are not allowing for.

Dude, it says Hatcher or Minter. Could be just done alphabetically. No way do we need a 210 pound MLB. Minter's gotta step up.

FWIW... I saw Hatcher yesterday and he is looking SWOLL... looks like they have but a lot of mass on him

If Hatcher gets 110, the rest of the conference must not use a fullback.

Exactly. Could be Hatcher or Minter

He probably could play MLB, but I think he would be better at the Sam spot. He has the speed to cover TE's.

Regardless of the 'or', it's a sign that Chavis is considering Hatcher the starter or equal to the starter.
I hate to be completely negative, but it's usually not a good sign when coaches transition one player to another position.
Yes, I know there are hundreds of examples where this works out. Sometimes, it's just a case of getting the best athletes on the field. But this move has a negative air about it. If this is about getting the best on the field, why wan't Hatcher moved to LB last year before Francois?

Because Hatcher was given a shot to play safety and didn't play very well. At LB, I'm expecting Chavis to use him stricly as a blitzing linebacker, he still has speed, but at the LB position his pass coverage will not be as important.

WOW.
other points of interest:
Freak listed as a starting DT, with no -or-
Taylor - or - Reid at SS, and Reid not being the backup at FS

I suppose you're right. I forget about the depth at S not really coming on strong till later in the year. Once the light came on for Reid and Loston, there was no room for Hatcher.
I just noticed another depth chart oddity. Holder = Seth Fruge. Has a LB ever been the holder for placekicks? He must be really good at "the flip".
