What's the longest an outfielder has ever run to catch a fly ball?

gotta be dead center in Minute Maid Park if I had to gusss
Unless the centerfielder is playing deep, the batter hits a high pop up behing the catcher, the other 8 fielders besides CF have a massive heart attack and collapse, but the CF is committed to the game so he runs his arse off to behind the plate and makes the catch

I would say It was Ron Leflore from the tigers in old Tiger Stadium. Straight away CF was at 440. He was playing a pull hitter in right Center field and ran and made the catch right at the wall at 440 ft.

Not sure if it was the longets but I was there and it seemed to take forever for him to get to the ball.

quote:It was actually 425. The "440" painted on the wall was a never-corrected error. Also, the left field pole at Fenway isn't 310; it's like 308 or something.

The center field fence was brought in to 415 feet in 1954 and then moved part of the way back (to 425 feet) in 1955, but the old 440 distance marker they put back on the center field fence was misleading,
Click the link, and hover your mouse over "1938" and then "1955." You'll see that CF moves in, but the measurement never changes. CF at TS was about 425'.

Sorry, but that doesn't seem extraordinarily long. The greatest thing about that play was the over the head catch. SURELY there have been longer runs.

I don't know Jon Kaplan, but I have some new baseball rules proposals.
