I'm trying to find an article or stats of some sort comparing MLS attendance numbers to the NBA/MLB/NFL for an article I'm writing. I'm on google looking, but can't seem to find something valid.
thanks in advance sirs and madames

Someone else posted this a couple weeks back. The MLS is like 17,350 and the NBA is 17,300, NHL is like 17,190

If you want attendance stats for other sports, your best bet is to crunch the numbers yourself. I just did average attendance for the NHL and NBA, but there were more things I could have done, like comparing attendance to capacity and what not. I couldn't find any clear averages for any sport other than the stuff I found on Bigsoccer, and still I redid the numbers to make sure my math was correct, because the peeps at Bigsoccer account for a lot of things.

I'm bookmarking your thread for future naysayers of the sport

Next year, the MLS attendance has a strong chance of exceeding 20,000 per game because of the addition of Montreal, and Houston's new stadium. All we really need is San Jose to get a new stadium so it can stop bringing the average down.

Just to play contrarian, you'll need to adress a few things.
MLS: 34 games
NBA: 82
NHL: 82
And average ticket price for all 3 sports.
Something to adress as a counter point is "could attendance numbers be affected by less games at a cheaper price".

ALSO, I think a better gauge of attendance may be the average % of capacity. There are several MLS stadiums that have capacity well above most NBA arenas.

Not all the stadiums were built for MLS teams though, that would skew your numbers.

Maybe, but stadiums like Qwest Field (actually now called CenturyLink Field) in Seattle reduce the official capacity for soccer matches because they don't sell seats in some sections. I believe they get over 30k for games at Qwest which are considered sell-outs even though that stadium holds 67,000.
Looking at Wikipedia, the stadium's official MLS capacity is 35,700...so you would base your attendance percentage on that capacity rather than 67,000.
ETA: Here are the stadium "official capacity" figures for all MLS stadiums per Wikipedia.
46,000 - RFK Stadium# (DC United)
37,500 - CenturyLink Field* (Seattle Sounders FC)
32,000 - Robertson Stadium# (Houston Dynamo)
27,000 - The Home Depot Center (LA Galazy; Chivas USA)
25,189 - Red Bull Arena (New York Red Bulls)
22,385 - Gillette Stadium* (New England Revolution)
21,800 - BMO Field (Toronto FC)
21,193 - Pizza Hut Park (FC Dallas)
20,500 - Empire Field (Vancouver Whitecaps FC)
20,455 - Columbus Crew Stadium (Columbus Crew)
20,008 - Rio Tinto Stadium (Real Salt Lake)
20,000 - Toyota Park (Chicago Fire)
19,680 - Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Colorado Rapids)
19,000 - Jeld-Wen Field (Portland Timbers)
18,500 - PPL Park (Philadelphia Union)
18,467 - Livestrong Sporting Park (Sporting KC)
10,300 - Buck Shaw Stadium (San Jose Earthquakes)
* These stadiums have artificially reduced their official capacities for MLS games.
# These stadiums are football stadiums that host MLS teams but do not artificially reduce official capacity.

It's in the works
San Jose had 35K for the New York game in Stanford stadium. The city has been dragging its feet for a couple of years on the issue but it should happen by the time I get a job there. :fingerscrossed:

lol, give it time. There's probably a % of attendees that are there because it's the inagural season. I think you'll see a slight dip in the next year or two. On the other hand, I DON'T see that being the case in Portland.

Vancouver is in a temporary stadium this season. I expect their numbers to go up after they move into BC Place. The question is how do those numbers look 5 years from now.

According to Wikipedia, the expected soccer capacity for BC Place will be 22,000 - just 1,500 more than their current stadium.

True. I remember them mentioning the sell-out figure during yesterday's match.

At this point, the best gauge is average attendance, as the league is still in its infancy using stadiums that are relatively new with a very new fanbase. Taking capacity into account shows that certain teams are playing in stadiums much too large for their fanbase (like DC) or playing in venues much too small (San Jose) or shows (in the case of teams like Columbus) struggling and failing to get people in the seats.
I'd argue that attendance numbers are more complicated than the average % of capacity can show. MLS is drawing crowds of 20k in 26% of games, and have drawn 20k crowds in 20% of games in four out of the last five years. In the same time period, the amount of games with less than 10k dwindled down to less than 10%, and has been dwindling for four of the last five years. That points to an upward trend, that when combined with overall attendance figures, can be very helpful in negotiating a better TV contract, which would allow the sport further growth.
Now, if at a point in the future every team has a stadium that fits more or less with its fanbase, then the capacity percentage numbers can be drawn into the debate so as to find struggling franchises and either move them, or help reorient their marketing strategy.

The new Earthquakes' stadium is only going to hold between 15,000-18,000? That seems pretty low, but I guess it's still a big improvement over the current stadium.
