Sunday evening at Chimes

Service:
Typical college young woman service. Somewhat "unprofessional" but friendly. Heck it's a job for a college kid.
Only complaint is that I ordered the Heiner Brau Strawberry Lager. Just wanted to try it. Saw it was $3.50. Got the bill and I had been given a pint instead of a glass, without being asked. Oh well, live and learn.

Food:
Dozen oysters. Somewhat sloppy presentation, but for $5 a dozen who can really complain. It is a make your own cocktail sauce place. The horseradish was really strong and very bitter (and I really like horseradish).

Salad with Tobasco Jelly Vinegarette. Very sweet. Not much kick and very oily. Salad was plain and overdressed.

Chef's Special Stuffed Crab. Well it was definitely stuffing. The dish was mostly stuffing and very little seafood. A little heavy. It was ok, but definitely not that special.
The hushpuppies are really good. Red beans and rice on the side were very good. Much better than the stuffing stuffed crab.

Chimes is pretty overrated to me except for the burgers

Horseradish is a thing that is more "batchy" than any micro-brew beer will ever think of being, or any cayenne pepper could ever reach. The stuff is wierd as to year, environment of the EXACT little plot of land it is grown upon.

If you order something on tap, you will ALWAYS get the pint unless you specify that you want a glass. Like you said, live and learn.

Wow. Thanks so much for that insight.

It was so different I asked the waitress if anyone else had commented on it.

I am very pleased it wasn't just me.

The atmosphere/location, and the beer selection are definitely what keep people coming back. The only food I enjoy at the Chime's is their sunday brunch menu, and the appetizers.

sunday brunch is awesome, certain menu items are great to me, but i can see how some think its over-rated. Guess the charm and nostalgia of the place go a long way for certain people.

I can honestly say ive never had a bad experience at either location.

Best bar snack by far.

Should have gotten the blackened alligator app.

That's a good thing in my opinion.

i was drinking at Gingerman not too long ago. ordered a half pour of scotch at the bar ($6) then sat down at a table and switched my tab to the waitress. come bill time I see that the three scotches i ordered at the table were full pours ($12 each). i inquire and she tells me that if we don't specify they give a full pour. i replied with "of course you do." paid my bill and left.

I believe if you order draft, this is standard. You get pints at most restaurants, so glass is special request I assume.

I appreciate your honest and well thought out post. You were not "bashing" The Chimes...you just gave an honest account of your experience.

Thanks. Yes, not bashing at all. We had a good time, and I'll definitely go back (probably 6 times in the fall.

As one poster said, it is a place that is more than just about the food.

Are the BBQ shrimp & seafood pasta dishes worth getting at Chimes?

The BBQ shrimp is good but if I remember right it's a little expensive for what you get.

I'd skip the pasta, personally.
