My $.02: I find it a little concerning that a guy who has only fired a handgun a few years back (or however he put it) wants to get into guns by buying an AR. I guarantee he is choosing this weapon because he thinks it looks cool or because he thinks it will make him look cool. I don't think that is a healthy or sustainable reason to get into firearms. It is NOT a good choice for home defense, especially for a beginner. Also, the thought of someone learning to shoot a rifle with a loaded 30 round mag should be concerning to anyone at the range that day. You know he won't just put a couple of rounds in the mag the first time.
If he is not going to be hunting, a handgun or shotgun is probably a better choice to start.

Why? Because it fires more than one round each trigger pull. Id say this is better than hillbilly joe with BAR in 300 winmag. I bet that gun id more dangerous with a first time shooter than an ar.
