The success (or lack thereof) of our WR's in the NFL

I know. Offseason threads are just wonderful
Was thinking about what we have as far as WR this year and how Tolliver went undrafted, and it really made me think about how good our WR's actually are heading into the NFL. We get a lot of top prospects coming out of high school, and sometimes even have a lot of hype going into the draft, but how many have actually panned out in the pros?
In no particular order:
LaFell: inconsistent and unimpressive 1st year in Carolina
Doucet: Injuries have hurt him, but really hasn't impressed much in Arizona.
Bowe: Shaky start, but I think finally becoming a top-tier receiver in KC.
Byrd: Never really got a chance because of the accident, but how well was he really expected do do in the NFL?
Davis: just a bust in SD. Really expected him to do well, but I guess a product of JR's rocket arm.....??
Clayton: Great rookie year, but has pretty much vanished since.
Henderson: Has done well in NO, but I would pretty much place most of his success on #9's arm. Decent career, I guess.
Green: never was going to be much of a receiver in the NFL. Only chance was to make his mark as a return guy, and that never really panned out.
Reed: The most productive receiver in LSU history, but just never got the chance to shine in Buffalo. He was in the shadow of Lee Evans, but it's conjecture to whether or not not Evans' absence would have made a difference in Reed's career. He had his fair shot.
I'm sure someone would have a better list and analysis of this. I'm a hardcore fan, but probably not as much as most on here. But from that list, Bowe has been our only true success story. Over the last few years, yes, our QB play has really hurt our WR's stats, but Doucet, Davis, and Reed don't have that excuse, and really have done nothing. Are we just not preparing them for the pros or is it something else?
Can Randle step us his game enough to become a good, not great, but just a good NFL receiver?

I actually think if someone picks up tolliver and works on his route running that he could be very productive in the NFL with his height.

In the 2009 season when it was Doucet's time to step up, he did a damn good job. IIRC they bumped him up a spot in the roster. Don't forget they don't have a QB worth a damn anymore also. I think Doucet is going to have a pretty solid career.

Only a small number of college players actually make it to the pros; then only a small number of those guys are actually going to be successful consistently. Playing and being successful in the NFL is not an easy task.

Wr's are the position where you can dominate college an suck in the NFL or vise versa. Our Wr's did good, but overall the chances a wr makes it is slim. Having 1 WR every few years make it means a lto.

I think the most disappointing one, at least for me, is Davis, especially since he went 1st round.
Wasn't that the same year that JR went 1st, and Bowe was later that round? Good year, draft wise for LSU. 1 out of 3 ain't too bad, right?

Is your expectation that every WR drafted become a long term NFL starter?? There are lots of highly drafted WRs that don't even stick around the NFL for as long as our worst example, Davis, has. Sure, Bowe is our only big time success story right now. But the same could be said for RBs over the past decade. (Well, two success stories if your count DD's short time in the spotlight before injury.)
The NFL draft is a crapshoot when it comes to getting a very good+ player. That's just the way it is.

Dude, Josh Reed was in the NFL for what, 8 seasons? That's pretty damn good. He was never expected to be a number 1 WR. He was always a great fit as a slot receiver, that was his role.
Exactly what kind of production are you expecting? Henderson is the Saints' deep threat. Doucet was drafted to provide depth behind Fitzgerald, Bowe is the No. 1 target in KC.

No doubt about it that LSU produces NFL defense talent more than offensive.

Reed never had the size to be a great Wr. With these giant CB's he would get worked if he was a #1. In a slot he is a lot like Welker. Just didn't have Brady throwing to him.

Off topic but how about Arizona vs Falcons...im sure all bama and lsu fans will be tuned into round 4 Julio vs Peterson

Peterson is going to be like "Coach...I got this shite."

Its not just LSU, name a bunch of great NFL WR's from Bama or anywhere else (all from the same era you described)... Its hit or miss really.

I don't expect everyone to be superstars. Of course not. Just with my expectation of some of them coming out of college, I was just hoping for more for a lot of them, especially Clayton and Davis.
How well is LaFell expected to do in the next couple of years? Honest question. Being in that black hole that is Carolina, I'm sure he had a hard time making a go of it.

Laffell actually had a decent rookie season. Last I heard of him, he's improving into a good NFL receiver.

think about this and take a look at the QB's those guys had in the pros. Only Davis has flamed out with a good QB.
IMHO, WR's are almost entirely a function of the QB play in the NFL, with very rare exceptions.

Plus he gets to get some tips from cromartie and practice against one of the best WR's in the game with larry fitz...peterson is gonna be ready

Also has alot to do with just pure athletic ability and style of offenses

I remember hearing John Clayton talk about how much of a disappointment he was; inconsistent hands and whatnot. But how often is Clayton right about anything?
Didn't get to see much of his play, so wasn't sure.
