In recent years, there has been immense surge in the development of social media sites. With this trend likely to continue for several years (worldwide), I'm curious where that leaves Craigslist, the classified ad-social media hybrid.

In ten years, will activity on Craigslist be as high as it is now? Or will it be replaced by other social media sites' attempts at duplication of Craigslist?

IMO, as long as craigslist doesn't change anything, it won't be outdone

They haven't changed a thing since 2001. It's amazing they have 29 employees and make estimated 75-100 million a year.

off topic, but what would the 29 employees actually do? and how do they bring in 75 million where does it come from?

They make their money from Job Postings. I believe it's the only thing they charge for. $25, if I'm not mistaken.

Revenue comes from selling ads in large markets. I would assume the employees are bean counters for the most part.

IMO, Craigslist will be purchased by some big company.

I believe eBay already owns 25% of it.

IMO, the next Big Thing to rival Craigslist is a classified site that somehow only allows "trusted" and/or "verified" users

The biggest problem with CL is endless spam and shady MFers

If a site comes along and does something simple like take a valid credit card for posting privileges, that alone can clean up a lot of the bs that people hate dealing with

how about this modification to craigslist:

- you have to give a cc and set up an account

- each post costs $1

- if you post more than 10 posts in a month, you are charged for each post

- if you post 10 or fewer posts in a given month, you are not charged

this lets the infrequent poster place small numbers of ads for free, and extracts fees from spammy posters who blast the board dozens or even hundreds of times per month

ETA: I stole this idea from PACER

Have you met the average Craigslist shopper? I have and it's scary. Don't know if they have credit cards.
