Once the water gets high enough it will just go through the woods and around the barge.
Scroll down this thread and you'll find links to the May 13 town meeting in Morgan City. Those videos explain the details of the plan.

I live at Bayou Corne. Things are looking better for us. What's the latest on Bayou Chene. I don't see anything posted since 5/20.

There was an article in the Advocate this morning saying there is a 2.5' difference in the water level on each side of the project which points towards it working thus far.

Happily admitting I was wrong! Kudos to those involved in the project, it's kept everyone high and dry so far. Hope all that happens out of this is everybody winds up with a bunch of free fill dirt!

I've heard rumors that plans have been presented to the COE in order to build a permanent structure there...Anyone else hear that?

Man that would suck. Although it doesn't surprise me as I am sure they don't want to spend the money to remove the thing. We sea trial allot of our new construction tugs in the Chene.

I believe it would be some type of large gate that could be closed when the Morganza is opened. Otherwise, it would just stay open...But it all could just be a rumor, who know's...

From what I heard, they submitted a plan to leave the side sections in place, so if this came up again, it would just be closing the middle section.

Thanks for the information. You think it's too early to do a happy dance yet?

Any permanent structure will have to allow traffic with a beam of ~100ft to get through. Anything smaller would preclude large material barges from getting to McDermott's yard to the GOM.

The permanent structure would leave a 250' path for larger vessels to still pass through.

Look closely at the pics I posted above from 73...Notice in the color photo that the water to the left is the water that the barge was meant to hold back. It is higher than that on the right.
I found the picture I had always heard about that showed the difference in the water in 1973. It was on the front page of MC's Daily Review yesterday. The south side shows muddy murky water and the north side of the barge shows clear lake water. You can probably check it out on the daily review's online site.
