Don't be embarrassed since like 20 posters on the M/TV board have watched the series and greatly enjoyed it. The good news is Season 1 is the worst season and it only gets better, but to say its the worst season isn't saying much since it is such a good series. The characters are extremely well developed and feel like real people in a ridiculous world. It executes the Hero's Journey almost perfectly (and for multiple characters), and the fight scenes are great as well. They are also making a sequel series about the Avatar after Aang which should be good, and supposedly it will be much more mature than this series was.
And the film is a complete abomination. Everything you enjoyed about the show is completely sucked out. Unless you want to be infuriated, I would advise against watching it.

It gets much better as you get further into it. I felt a little foolish for watching and couldn't get into it after the first 7 or 8 episodes. It quickly won me over though. It's a great series.

The cartoon is great, just like others have said. The movie should be literally shoved up M. Nights arse.

And can't wait for the new mini-series they're developing for Avatar (The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra) that's due out in 2012. Should be amazing.

The cartoon is effin awesome....the movie was very very very watered down..
I practice water bending in my pool.....I must say, I'm pretty good at it...lol
