Rohan, the lack of Ghostzapper in your list is ridiculous.

okay fellas, didn't feel a new thread was needed but we're about 15 minutes from post time for the Florida Derby. it's a very impressive field with a lot of Derby hopefuls going:

1. Soldat 9/5
2. To Honor and Serve 5/1
3. Arch Traveler 40/1
4. Bowman's Causeway 30/1
5. Shackleford 50/1
6. Stay Thirsty 8/1
7. Dialed In 6/1
8. Flashpoint 8/1

*Stay Thirsty is Uncle Mo's stable mate, fwiw. I like Soldat to win.

This $1 million field is much deeper than SOLDAT, who is Countdown's No. 1-ranked Triple Crown hopeful heading into the weekend. TO HONOR AND SERVE (Bill Mott) should be much stronger today than he was when a flat third to SOLDAT in the G2 Fountain of Youth, but still likely programmed to peak in the next start by the master horseman. DIALED IN (Nick Zito) carries 6 pounds more than he has all winter, but could be as good as any in his class. STAY THIRSTY (Todd Pletcher) finally gets the route distances his pedigree calls for, and it feels especially good to see his championship trainer share the same opinion we had here last month when suggesting STAY THIRSTY be equipped with blinkers.

quote:

This year's Florida Derby appears to be worth every cent of its $1 million purse as horsemen and critics alike have praised the eight-horse lineup as the best assembly of leading 3-year-olds yet in 2011.

Included in the field for Gulfstream Park's 11/8-mile test are five graded stakes winners, all of whom could still be marching toward Kentucky even if they finish off the board in their daunting final prep.

Morning-line favorite Soldat is at the forefront of the group, thanks to his impressive 2-length win in the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes on Feb. 26, an effort in which he defeated multiple graded stakes winner and fellow Florida Derby entrant To Honor and Serve.

LaPenta's Dialed In delivered one of the more visually impressive efforts when he won the Grade III Holy Bull Stakes in just his second career start Jan. 30 while Mike Repole's Stay Thirsty proved he was more than just champion Uncle Mo's stablemate when he took the Grade III Gotham Stakes in his season debut at Aqueduct on March 5.

Dialed In is owned by an Iona College alum, Robert LaPenta. His jockeys always don the Maroon and Gold silks. Go Gaels!!!

Uncle Mo just got his clock cleaned in the Wood Memorial by a couple of no-names. no longer undefeated. Kentucky Derby is pretty wide open right now, IMHO.

To me Uncle Mo never was going to get 1 1/4 miles. I was hoping he would win today so people would still bet on that nag. Right now there is no clear cut horse. I haven't had a chance to watch the Illinois Derby yet. I feel this race often gets overlooked.

i don't know if it was a bad ride by the jockey or what. that field was pretty weak I thought Mo would win by 5+ lengths. he had a lead at the 8th pole but just didn't have an extra gear when he needed it. didn't even set a fast pace, just sucked it up down the stretch for whatever reason.

i watched that earlier. I took Smarty Jones' foal Smarter Than Ever to show but he didn't get it done. pretty good race. give it a watch.

btw, Santa Anita Derby post time @ 6:37 CDT

I am still taking Elite Alex and The Factor. The report is Elite was flying. I hadnt seen the LA derby but heard Bo Rail got swung wide and never got him on a good trip. The Factor is just a rocket out of the gate.

I'm probably going with Dialed In. he showed strong finishing ability in Florida and he should like the Derby surface. and you know Zito will have him ready.

How have I not been over here to check?

And nobody paged me

my pick is out with a fracture, so I'm starting all over.

AND, just to brag, the bf just called me to say I was right about mo :cheers/

I said they were being too careful with him

I'm apparently the only one not on the elite wagon. I liked him until he stepped into the paddock in the southwest in front wraps. They should give him a little bit of a cut back and aim for the queens plate since he's an on bred.

Secretariat was undefeated going into the Wood and ended up finishing third in that race to Sham and some no-name. and we all know what happened after that.

It's not the third that bothers me... He needed to get beat.

I think that could help him.

It's the 1 turn overnight stakes that bugs the HELL out of me

they've been too careful with him. I don't think he's mentally ready for a 20 horse field.
